From the director of Oscar-nominated The Twilight Samurai. Set in then mid-19th century, at the time when guns are taking over from swords, Yoji Yamada's tale is an exploration of Samurai ethics and forbidden love.
Munezo's best friend, Yaichiro, has gone to join a distant clan and he remains in a small village where he becomes one of the few samurai to be taught the new skills of artillery. However, when he takes in his sick and ailing former maid, he's also implicated in a plot by members of the Edo clan against his leaders. The main plotter is Yaichiro, and to prove his clan loyalty, Munezo is ordered to kill his childhood friend...
Nominated for the Golden Bear at the 2005 Berlin Film Festival.

I happened to stumble across this movie when I was 'flicking' through the freeview channels when I came across this movie which looked rather interesting. As I kept watching I noticed that I got drew more and more into this movie. Without giving too much of the plot away:
This movie focuses on a samurai who hears of an ex servant of his house falling ill, only to go to where she is being 'looked after' to find her weak and ill, unable to move and in a poor condition. He takes her home to look after her.
This movie explores the honor that the samurai must keep to and the love of men and women. The movie is really gripping and has a great story that will make you appreciate the action, but also enjoy the storytelling. Essential Samurai cinema
