This film is fine. Its not bad, its fine. While the technology behind it is impressive and the 3D was game changing there are several "downers". First, the plot is simple, predictable and feels like an after thought to the 3D. Secondly, without the 3D its an average film, with some cringe worthy dialogue. And to top it all off, the DVD has NO EXTRAS WHAT SO EVER, something which is unexcusable for a film like this, the reasoning behind the lack of extras being simple. THERE WILL BE ANOTHER REISSUE IN TIME FOR CHRISTMAS.
Judging this film as it is, without the 3D, minus the big screen and HD surround sound, this film is an average Jim Cameron movie, 30 minutes too long and not well enough written to warrant additional viewings.
I seen Avatar at the cinema, but to be honest I wasn't that bowled over by it. The first half was incredibly boring and tedious to watch with Sam Worthington getting used to his avatar and getting acquainted with the tribe etc. Thankfully in the second half things do pick up a bit more and the action set pieces are pretty spectacular.
Overall I wasn't incredibly impressed by Avatar, if you like James Cameron's flicks then there's a chance you will like this, but in my humble opinion it was half a good/bad movie that could have been better.
Every great director has a great film and i thought with James Cameron it could have been any one of Terminator 1 or 2 or even Aliens but this movie sets a new standard in movie making. It took 5 years and $300m to make and it was totally worth it. The plot was solid, the acting was fantastic and the SFX were mindblowing. Despite the brilliant summer of movies this for me is the best of 2009 period. Enjoy
Gave this the best possible chance to impress by going to the Imax 3D cinema in London with the best possible seats and still think this would have been just as good in 2D.
Not sure why 3D (which seems to resurface every decade) is now "the next best thing" as it doesn't draw you in any more than normal 2D viewing...Other than that the film was ok , couple of butt clenchingly cringeable moments but not to many , action was AWESOME but not as good as previous Cameron films.
Shame I've had to wait 12 years between Cameron's films as I'm a huge fan of his and breaks my heart to give him such an average review / rating.
