Theres so many things that have been said over that past 100+ years about 'Jack The Ripper'. Many of it will be covered in smog, clouding the judgement of who the real Ripper was. This is only to be expected when "new" information comes to light, and conspiracy theorists add their own thoughts. We will probably never know the real truth about 'Jack' but that doesnt stop people making films or documentaries about this case. Jack killed at least 5 women. 5 that have been historically accredited to him/her. Some say it could reach 7 or 8 victims. Jacks killing spree lasted from 31st August 1888 - 9th November 1888, and in this time he killed the 5 women accredited to him. Maybe more.
"Whitechapel" is a modern story for the search of a copycat killer. Our new 'Jack' is killing women in the same manner as his predecessor did all those years a go. The cast is solid, the Direction from 'Clarkson' is great and the pacing just keeps you watching. Very well executed indeed!
'Steve Pemberton' (League of Gentlemen / Psychoville / Benidorm) is excellent as the Ripperologist. 'Phil Davis' (Howling 5 / Dead Man Running) plays hard nosed 'DS Miles' alongside 'Rupert Penry Jones' (Spooks / The Tribe) as DI Joe Chandler.
You do NOT need to be a "Ripper Fan" to enjoy this DVD. Anyone with an interest in 'Jack' will like it, while those who just enjoy a well made TV film can just sit back and be entertained just the same! With a runtime of 136 minutes but sadly only one extra (Making Of Featurette), 'Whitechapel' is well worth 5.99! (price correct: 4 Mar 2010).
The only thing that i found ever so slightly annoying was the titles rolling at the end of each episode. You just started to really get into it, then that episode would finish. They should have edited the 3 (if i remember rightly) episodes together so there were no breaks in continuity; hence, would be much better for the viewer. I can fully understand why they did this, due to the fact it would have been shown on TV first and they spread the film over a few nights etc, but none the less, they could have editted to be a continuous play back. You can select 'Play All' from the main menu and watch all of it in one sitting but like i say, theres the credits to deal with. Thats not a huge/major distraction though, just a tad annoying. Enjoy!
