I loved DW. I am aware that it was not historically accurate but it told a great story. I really wish there had been a 12 part mini series. The acting was often moving and brought together a great set of performers. Another reviewer felt that John Simm was miscast, but I really feel that he gave the part of Sexby a huge depth . Andrea Riseborough was fantastic throughout as was Tim McInerney as the evil Jollife. Can't wait to own a copy.

I thought this was one of the best British dramas to be shown for a long time. Yes it would have been nice to have longer to tell the story but I thought they coped admirably with the time restraints. The cast was superb - especially John Simm's Sexby, who portrayed such a range of emotions so effortlessly. The cinematography was beautiful - some of the shots looked like they were straight out of a Renaissance painting. The music was also hauntingly beautiful. Some of the historical details are incorrect but this is a drama based around events and it gives a much more realistic telling of history than the pantomine that was 'The Tudors'.
All in all a fantastic, emotional ride through the civil war.

There were several things wrong with this series. It was so short, too much plot had to be jetisoned. The narrative was riddled with major historical inaccuracies & the script was poorly written. If ever there was a botched, missed opportunity to portray one of this country`s most exciting moments this was it.Given that,it came across as a superbly filmed episode of Eastenders.Pass me the smelling salts nurse.
