The saga of the Crompton family's struggle to wrest power from their bible-thumping father is a gently humorous portrayal of a family caught up in the demands made upon them by a changing society.

second best film of all time (shawshank first)

This film will make you laugh and make you cry. Conservatively I've watched this film 50 times or more and it gets more enjoyable every time. James Mason is simply brilliant, ruling the household with a rod of iron. Too many highlights and one liners in the film to mention. If only we lived our lives to these standards today - Britain would be a much better place!

An important slice of social history

When i first saw this film in the cinema my girl friend, with whom i saw it, turned to me half way through and whispered to me "It's just like being at home". She was right, the victorian values held by James Mason's character echoed her own father's and many men like him, men who had raised children during the permissive "swinging"60s and had struggled to accept the speed at which the second half of the 20th century had galloped away from the first half. This film is a perfect stepping stone between films like This happy breed and the likes of Mike Leigh's Secrets and lies in the development of the modern family. That said, this boasts a superb cast who tell an enthralling story in a most entertaining way and is definately one of the films to see before you die and preferably before you have children .

Can't believe it, I've been looking for Spring and Port Wine on DVD for at least 5 years! One of the best films ever made, it stuck in my mind for years, so pleased that it's been brought out on DVD at last - can't wait. It makes you proud to be British!!

Its about time that this film was released, its a british classic encapturing family life in northern england (farnworth and bolton area), an under-rated classic.
