Top 100 DVD Reviewer

This is, in my opinion, the best Ray Harryhausen movie ever of his lifetimes work, and reportedly the man himself agrees, and it's probably the one everyone remembers most and it established his supreme talent of creating epic movies on a shoestring budget, and was also one of the very few that got an 'A' rating rather than being considered a B movie.

It has everything a Ray Harryhausen movie should have, stop motion magical creatures who really do seem to connect with the actors, jaw dropping effects, non stop action, battles against gigantic fantastical foes, all bound together with great settings and characters, and I can think of no reason why anyone shouldn't enjoy this movie.

The skeleton battle is still widely considered to be among the greatest achievements of motion picture special effects and the giant bronze statue of Talos that comes to life is still creepy and impressive, people hold their breath!

Of course, as always, this requires some suspension of disbelief to enjoy it properly nowadays, some of the continuity is a bit off, the vocal dubbing is a bit distracting, and by modern standards the effects aren't exactly seamless, you always know which is real and which is Ray working his magic, but you just have to throw yourself into it anyway and enjoy it for the fun romp it always was!

Considering this has to be THE classic Ray Harryhausen movie, the DVD extras are a little lacking, and it would be fantastic to have a special edition where the great man adds a commentary track for example, but to be honest, I'd buy it just for the movie anyway.

Thoroughly recommended for all ages!
