Two lost souls. One fight for redemption...

In one corner is Sang-hwan (Ryoo Seung-bum), a bitter and angry young man with a huge chip on his shoulder. Despite the best efforts of his father, Sang-hwan's rebellious criminal behavior finally lands him in juvenile prison. There, at what seems to be the lowest moment in his young life, a guard turns him towards boxing in the hope of safely channelling his rage at the world.

In the other corner is Tae-sik (the ever marvellous Choi Min-sik), a middle-aged man whose moment of glory came long ago when he won the silver medal for Korea as an amateur boxer at the Asian Games. Yet now, with his family life falling apart due to mounting debt, he earns his income as a novelty act, standing out in the street and offering up his body as a punching bag to passersby for money...

What brings these two characters together is the subject of Ryoo Seung-wan's extraordinary film in which the destination is not so important as the means taken to get there. Directing his brother Ryoo Seung-bum and Oldboy's Choi Min-sik, perhaps the premier actor ever produced by Korea, with a deftness and maturity that had only been hinted at in his early Tarantino-esque career (No Blood No Tears) and his recent popcorn output (Arahan), Ryoo Seung-wan resolutely avoids the boxing movie cliche.

Gritty, violent, and emotionally compelling, the gripping Crying Fist is one film that certainly packs a real punch!

 Brilliant Film

The star of Oldboy puts in another powerhouse performance that is matched by the rest of the cast. It's a boxing movie that actually isn't really a boxing movie - there are only few brief fight scenes and it certainly avoids the usual formula: instead of an inspirational story of a boxer rising up through dedication, you get two gritty stories of men enduring great hardship for little reward. As such, it's not even 'one for the lads' as its essentially gripping drama more than anything else. The fact it is also based on a true stury makes it even more compelling.

A great and moving film; both of the main actors put on a stunning performance. The differnce in this film is that both characters are likeable, they are both underdogs and you can relate to both of them. By the time they got into the ring i could honestly not decide who 'deserved' to win.

Emotinal and very real, a all round great movie.

 Amazing story with punch...

Crying Fist is another example of why Korean cinema is so widely regard as the new Hollywood, Choi min-shik and Ryoo Seung-wan's performances as always, above par. The story charts the rise of two people who have hit rock bottom and are looking to get themselves back of their feet. A must watch

Crying fist is a typical type of story really, underdogs who as you know even before watching it will rise to the top. Unfortunately for this movie, it just doesn't seem original in its content, it seems like a couple of older Hollywood movies.
The older character is a down and out, he has no money and is struggling to live. The majority of his scenes have a very Rocky like feel to them, especially his training sequence.
The younger character is sent to prison where he begins to fight, an immediate Mean Machine/Undisputed feel forms and you can't help feeling you've already seen part of this before.
The story is quite deep for both main characters and generally the movie does a good job of getting you into the mood. When watching the movie you'll really feel for the characters and you want them to succeed.

Overall: Its a good movie but it doesn't feel original, it just feels like something you've seen before. There's even a training montage seqence like in all of the Rocky movies, and it generally looks just like the ones in Rocky. This is one of those movies you'll either love it or think of it as being, alright! It's impossible to hate it so its worth checking it out!
