EPIC. that is truely the only way to describe this box set. 4 discs of pure enjoyment. Not only do you get the 1959 William Wyler movie, but the 1925 silent movie version too. There are 2 excellent documentaries, one from 1994 and one from 2005 which are different enough to keep you fixated. Each interviews different people in the movie industry and gives their takes on the production and their insight into how and why it is such a landmark movie. In a time before CGI, you will be amazed at the scale of this movie. The chariot race is stunning and a centre piece of the movie. Charlton Heston is likeable enough to hold this movie together and his fall and rise again against his enemy Messala is riveting. The characters are nicely done and portrayed in a way which makes them not black and white, good or bad. Split over 2 discs, this makes it perfect for viewing in two parts and I highly recommend watching the silent move FIRST so as to see the similarities of the productions and how they raised the bar in telling the same story. For instance, the portrayal of Jesus is well done in both and utilises the same technnique of seeing, yet not seeing him. The scene in the Wyler movie where the guard tries to stop Jesus giving Judah some water and the effect of Jesus on him is amazing. No words, just the mans reaction. It is easy to see why this movie is still relevant today and how it still stands up. Like Lord Of The Rings, the sheer effort which has been put into the movie comes across in ever single frame, no corners were cut and nothing sacrificed. Well worth the investment, you will not be dissapointed.
