Korea, 1950. They were a MASH (Mobile Army Surgical Hospital) unit stationed three miles from the front. Incoming helicopters full of wounded brought the horrors of war to them daily and sometimes bullets flew right outside the operating room door. Hilarity and hijinks were all that kept them sane.

Now journey back to that special place where friendships were forged, laughter was found and drinks were served.

MASH was the hit tv series that ran 11 seasons and is still one of the greatest comedy/dramas. This first season introduces us to Hawkeye and Trapper, two indespensible surgeons of the 4077th MASH. Do they take advantage of this.......... YES THEY DO.
Also introduced is Commanding officer Henry Blake, who cannot make a decision to save his life. Company clerk Radar who anticipates everything people say to him. and Frank Burns and Margaret 'Hotlips' Hoolihan, the two majors who want to bring order to the 4077th.
The first season is enjoyable fun, although it doesn't quite hit its stride yet. Its when you see episodes like 'Sometimes you hear the bulliet' you can see where MASH will eventually go.
As for the DVD features. OK the picture quality ain't that great. It has not been cleaned up for DVD at all and there are no features like interviews or making ofs.
The real bonus however is the option of getting rid of the laugh track for each episode which is a real plus and the way the show is intended to be.
If you have never seen MASH before give it a watch. You might be pleasently surprised

One of the best tv shows of all time

Based on a great film anyway, M*A*S*H is a beautifully made and acted show. Set in an army hospital during the Korean war of the early 1950s it manages to still be consistently funny even now, 36 years after it was first shown.

Its not hard to see why this show is so highly rated, even now. It is funny but not in a sanitised way. It was not afraid to have a dig at good old uncle sam, and it found the perfect blend or comedy, irony and pathos. The characters were all well rounded (especially as the series developed) and Alan Alda was born to play the role of Hawkeye (and to upstage Donald Sutherland who played the role in the film is no mean feat). The casting of other characters was also spot on and gave them a chance to develop.

This show worked because it rebelled against usual sitcoms and brought a sense of anger with it. It was bitingly satirical, critical, tragic at times and yet always damned funny. Maybe the fact that the Vietnam war was still going on also helped to keep it topical despite the fact it was based on an earlier conflict.

Mash worked and still works because it wears its heart on its sleeve. The characters grow as the show develops and whilst some episodes really stick out as plain brilliant, the writing and acting is consistent throughout its run. Satirical black comedy at its finest! Personally i rate this show and 'Bilko' as the two best comedy series to ever come out of the US. A wonderful show !

 the best

MASH has to be the BEST comedy series to EVER come from the U.S no other programme has ever managed to combine comedy, satire, sarcasm, irony (yes i said irony, something the yanks are normally not good at, no offence) sadness in only one episode off a show and MASH could do that consistently, i watched it all the first time round and the second time round and.......ok you get the picture and i still find it one off the best things i've ever seen bar none, you can keep your friends nonsense i'll take MASH any day.

One of the best comedies EVER

Top 100 Gadgets Reviewer

This is one of the best comedies to have EVER come out of the US. You follow the lives of a small group of doctors, nurses and staff at the MASH (Mobile Army Surgical Hospital) 4077 in Korea. These units were and still are the sticking plasters of the army medical and saw some of the worst injuries. MASH shows the highs and the lows these medics with comedy, tragedy, joy and sorrow, with laughter.
