John Simm stars as Sam Tyler, a driven and ambitious young detective, determined to keep the streets of 21st Century Manchester safe. But after a near fatal car accident, he wakes up, dazed and confused, in 1973. Has he gone back in time? Is he in a coma? Or has he simply gone insane?

What follows is Sam's 21st century account of 1970s life, where he feels like a fish out of water. He must come to terms with an unfamiliar environment and an archaic CID unit. There, using his modern know-how, he becomes integral to the unit. But he must adapt to their old-fashioned technologies and etiquettes.

Sam works on some of the hardest cases he's ever been involved with. It's a world where witnesses are regularly intimidated, it takes two weeks to process forensics, and his colleagues will nail their suspect whether they have the evidence or not...

 Absolutly Immense

I began watching Ashes to Ashes recently and thought how good it was compared to anything else on TV today. I thnought to myself... well lkife on mars must be worth watching. I lost my life for the next week and a half as i became enthralled in tales of time travel, crime and general misdemeanours with an amusing twist. I can honestly say that this is the best TV series i have ever watched and think many of you would agree. John Simm as Sam Tyler was a class apart and as for Phillip Glenister as DCI Gene Hunt, hes almost aspirational for many a male watching.
Aparently what makes it so special is the realism to the 1970's. Well as i come from the late 80's im clueless to this yet still believe that this programme takes drama to a new level.
Buy it buy it buy it... you wont be disappointed.

 Whackingly Brilliant

Best British T.V. series of the last five years, bar none. Absolutely incredible in terms of plot, drama, comedy, seriousness and light-heartedness intertwined, and mystery. Gene Hunt is rightly a legend and you cannot fail to enjoy a character that takes us all back to somewhere a whole lot more desirable - where common sense was the way to go and political correctness had not been invented. It will intrigue you, make ya laugh and make you cry all at the same time. If you haven't seen it, buy this and spend a lazy day in bed watching them all.

 wow... amazing

normally i'm not really into cop/police related shows, so when i heard of this show i missed it first time round. Now it being on cable tv i've been watching and since seeing the second episode i am hooked. Staying up late watching 5 episodes a night... It's more than amazing!
This show has great humor, action, drama and more... Such a great show! A total must see!!!

 Great stuff !

I don't tend to watch TV for anything other than football these days, so I missed out on seeing this programme when it was broadcast. However, having read about it I decided to buy the first series to see what all the fuss was about - and I am so very glad that I did. It really is gripping from the very first moment, the storylines both interesting and clever, with the characters perfectly cast. I greedily watched one episode after another in quick succession and am now eagerly awaiting the arrival of the DVDs for the second series to keep me going until Ashes To Ashes is shown in 2008. Life On Mars really is the best thing to be shown on TV in many a year.

 Well Done Beeb!

I have to admit I was extremely sceptical of another time-travelling programme. What with Dr Who and the daddy of time-travel sci-fis Quantum Leap, to compete with, this is an extremely absorbing if paradoxical programme. Yet it is completely and utterly brilliant. Humour, gripping finale (to this series), superb music and above-all fantastic acting between EVERY actor in the series make this quite possibly THE best BBC programme for a decade. Well done Beeb!
