He was King. She was barely 18. And in their thousand days they played out the most passionate and shocking love story in history!

This lush, perfectly cast 1969 drama concerns both a doomed, royal love affair and a pivotal moment in British history. Based on Maxwell Anderson's 1948 play, Anne of the Thousand Days concerns the mess that surrounded King Henry VIII's decision to rid himself of his first wife, Catherine of Aragon (Irene Papas), and marry the young Anne Boleyn (Geneviève Bujold). Henry (Richard Burton) solved his problems with the Vatican's condemnation of divorce by having himself named head of the Church of England, while Anne's perceived problem conceiving a male heir made her vulnerable to plots by the nefarious likes of Thomas Cromwell (John Colicos).

Director Charles Jarrott does a splendid job bringing all of these intrigues to life, though the story is ultimately about Anne, a naive young woman who prepares herself to navigate some of the dangers of Henry's court. Bujold and Burton never gave better performances, and this strange, tragic chapter in the history of the kings of England has never been more compellingly told on film.

Its ok - bujold is excellent as anne boleyn - richard burton is - dare i say it - wooden!- and yes gen was brilliant as anne - portrayed the thwarted woman separated against her will from henry lord percy - richard was less that inspiring if regal - yes he was regal but lacklustre. Sorry all those burton fans but everyone has her/his opinion.

Top 100 DVD Reviewer

An interesting film version of a small segment of the life of King Henry VIII, Richard Burton is cast against type as the King, not perhaps the immediate choice for the role, but a part that he pulls off very successfully which earned him an Academy Award Nomination. all performances are very good to be honest and it is a fine film in the genre of historic England. What lets it down is the fact that there it is mediocre. It achieves what it set out to do as countless other period dramas have done, but it delivers no more. Take the dialogue from this film and you could drop it into almost any other period film that you like and it would not look out of place. A Man For All Seasons this is not, but nevertheless it is not a film that should just be ignored. Certainly worth watching for any fan of the period as it is excellently executed (to excuse a pun).
