Now I am sure that most would have heard of the first Death Wish movie and to be honest they are all in the same genre but Bronson delivers a cracking performance as the VIGILANTE.... Now the first is obviously the best of the five (keep a look out for a young Jeff Goldblum) but all five movies give something and the fourth has to be my second favourite. We all like the underdog to win and as a Welsh Rugby supporter for years we had our underdog years and when the worm turns we all cheer and shout. Basically the movie is bad guys making peoples life hell and hurting the wrong guy and that guy turns out to be Paul Kersey a mild mannered Architect who learns how to be a cool minded avenger of evil. Bronson smoulders like a lit firework that you think has gone out when all of a sudden he lets the bad guys know that he means business.
So after viewing all five movies they are great late evening viewing and will warm the inner self knowing that the good guys sometimes get their own back in the movie world. I guess we all want a superman but the moral and ethical issues soon raise its head when the movie has finished.
Enjoy a great night with your fish and chips and a can and sit back and enjoy a mans film before the arrival of all those computer graphics and bombs and blasts........ A man with a gun was good enough for Clint Eastwood and Charles Bronson and its good enough for me......
When the first of the Death wish series came on the scene back in the 70's there really hadnt been anything like it.Sure there was the spate of more violently realistic action movies coming along like Dirty Harry etc,but none really captured that feeling that if we're honest we all harbour and that is,if someone was to threaten our way of life and family we would Pull out a gun and BLAM!!!!.The film spawned many copycats and not just in the film world.Real life vigilante shootings throughout the world were blamed on Death Wish, and to that you have to say The seed of an unhindged mind has surely already been planted in these nutters heads and it doesnt take a film to make them do what is already in them.Anyway enough preaching. The films did vary in quality as the series progressed ,each one becoming more cartoonlike in their execution(pardon the pun)with part three looking more like a high budget episode of The Equalizer than a part of the franchise and part four being the franchise version of Rambo. The final entry part five still holds together quite well with a brilliant villian in Michael Park and the beautiful Lesley Anne Down.It compliments the series very well following more the path of the early films rather than the GUNG HO 3 and 4.I have to say though, how can you go wrong with Charles Bronson? whose presence alone thrusts the movies forward bringing us five Highly Entertaining action films that if you dont get something from....well you're already dead.
