The true story of Germany's most famous anti-Nazi heroine is brought to thrilling life in the multi-award winning drama Sophie Scholl: The Final Days. Germany's official Foreign Language Film selection for the 2005 Academy Awards, Sophie Scholl stars Julia Jentsch (The Edukators) in a luminous performance as the fearless activist. Armed with long-buried historical records of her incarceration, director Marc Rothemund expertly re-creates the last six days of Sophie Scholl's life: a heart-stopping journey from arrest to interrogation, trial and sentence.

In 1943, as Hitler continues to wage war across Europe, a group of college students mount an underground resistance movement in Munich. Dedicated expressly to the downfall of the monolithic Third Reich war machine, they call themselves the White Rose. One of its few female members, Sophie Scholl is captured during a dangerous mission to distribute pamphlets on campus with her brother Hans. Unwavering in her convictions and loyalty to the White Rose, her cross-examination by the Gestapo quickly escalates into a searing test of wills as Scholl delivers a passionate call to freedom and personal responsibility that is both haunting and timeless.

Sophie Scholl: The Final Days received three Lolas (German Oscars) including the Audience Award and Best Actress Award to Jentsch for her brilliant portrayal of the title role. The film also won two Silver Bears for Best Director and Best Actress at the 2005 Berlin International Film Festival.

 Julia Jentsch at her Best

This was a truly wounderful watch , Julia Jentsch who won the European Film Actress award and the Silber Bar for this role, truly captures Sophie Scholl in her final days. The story is told in a new found frankness and does not resort to over sensationalist film making. The German Film industry has taken stock in the last 5 years to war films with Downfall paving the way for this film . Fabian Hinrichs ( Hans Scholl) plays him with a maturity that defies his newcomer status. Julia Jentsch Last seen in Die Fetten Jahren sind vorbei (The Edukators) and a small role in Downfall , brings life to one of the resistance movements most well known member. If at times it seems like she is method acting this is soon forgotten and you can escape into the world and you feel a genuine connection with the character. Gerald Held (Mohr) plays Graf the SD interrogator with unrivaled intelligence that brings maturity and depth to the role. The sets for this film were fantastic and the score of the film was wounderful. This is German Film Making at its best. If there is one German film that you should watch this is it .

Excellent film, pure and simple. Unlike some other WW2 films, Sophie Scholl demonstrates a maturity and honesty to devastating effect. The siblings are inevitably accosted by the SS and interograted about their political affiliation and reasons for apparent dissension - an inevitable conclusion eventually.
However, throughout the film, the dialogue, cinematography, and possibly most importantly, the implied doubt with every character is immensely engaging.
In conclusion, this is without doubt one of the best WW2 character study films. If you liked Saving Private Ryan style WW2, leave this; if you like character studies that invoke the cultural zeitgeist, you need this film...
