The Reader begins in Germany shortly after the end of WW2 when teenager Michael Berg becomes ill and is helped home by Hanna, a stranger twice his age. Michael recovers from scarlet fever and seeks out Hanna to thank her. The two are quickly drawn into a passionate but secretive affair.
Michael discovers that Hanna loves being read to and their physical relationship deepens. Hanna is enthralled as Michael reads to her from 'The Odyssey', 'Huck Finn' and 'The Lady With The Little Dog.' Despite their intense bond, Hanna mysteriously disappears one day and Michael is left confused and heartbroken.
Eight years later, while Michael is a law student observing the Nazi war crime trials, he is stunned to find Hanna back in his life - this time as a defendant in the courtroom. As Hann's past is revealed, Michael uncovers a deep secret that will impact both of their lives. The Reader is a haunting story about truth and reconciliation, about how one generation comes to terms with the crimes of another.

This is a very good film. I don't agree with other reviewers who say the film is boring because it is slow paced. The style of the film suits the story and is supposed to not have full on action all the time. The acting was very good. I have not read the book though but judging it just as a film, excellent.
This is a wonderfully thought provoking film in which, Kate Winslet delivers a phenomenal performance as a woman embroiled in a love affair with a young boy. The films takes a darker twist when she becomes the subject of nazi war criminal trials following the Second World War. Kate Winslet's performance aside it is easy to become immersed in the rich storyline and as a result it becomes a very enjoyable all be it emotional film to watch.
An amazing film once you get past the weirdness of the age gap between the two main characters. Though maybe not a film to watch if your looking for a happy ending. Other then that i don't see why anyone would dislike it. Very good acting and good plot, its convinced me to read the book. Definitely worth a watch.
This wasnt quite what I had expected! I had been told it was a fanastic film so I expected to be a lot more gripped by it! It was a good story & Kate Winslet was very good but it was a bit slow & I lost interest several times. It is good to watch, but I wouldnt bother buying it!
I really thought that I would love this film far more than I did. I had read the book a little beforehand and enjoyed it, but this film adaption just didn't work for me.
Where the book forced questions on the reader about the holocaust, the film jettisons that to concentrate on the relationship between Hanna (Kate Winslet) and Micheal. Their affair in the 1950s when he was 15 and her departure, then his discovery as a law student later that she is on trial for war crimes at Auschwitz. And it's here that the book's twist (which kind of works in the book) as to why Hanna will not defend herself, becomes patently ludicrous when thought about.
It sadly undermines the rest of the film, despite flawless acting from all concerned. The film is just less than book it came from. Perhaps not having read it would be an advantage, but too late for me!
