There are so many parallels between this and Spinal Tap, it's hard to believe what you're seeing is actually true. What is, essentially, a rather slight story about a heavy metal band that almost became huge, but dropped off the radar, becomes an incredibly emotional journey simply because of the stoic determination of the lead singer.
This isn't simply a perfect story, the direction itself is incredibly well handled. Some of the shots are so beautifully crafted, you begin to suspect that it isn't purely a documentary and that some of it may have been staged - but this is hardly a criticism.
It's a tribute to the people involved, that after watching this film you want to go out and buy some Anvil albums - not because they're any good, but because you want the guys to succeed.
I am not what you would call a metalhead, I prefer a nice evening in with my pipe and slippers and some nice Val Doonican on the radiogram but the story of Anvil caused my long-cold heart to give a little impromptu double-beat which is as close too excited as I get during these straitened times. A succession of talking heads (Slash, the tattooed man from Anthrax) tell us how hard Anvil rocked back in the 80s ,but will they give the long-suffering duo a support spot on their world conquering tours? Will they peanuts! The small cinema I sat in laughed heartily at the jokes (intentional and otherwise), felt superior at times, guilty at others and even shed a collective tear when Lipps (the singer/guitarist) went cap in hand to his big sister for the money to finance their umpteenth comeback album. All joking aside, this is a great documentary, a compelling story and a damn good laugh! What more do you want, flourescent codpieces?
I definately would never have thought a tale of two hairy, heavy metal musicians would have moved me so much.
Even if you hate heavy metal, just check this film out.
It will have you thigh slapping with laughter, and touched by the deep dedication these friends have for their music & each other.
BUY BUY BUY this is awsome a must for all heavy metal fans really funny, emotional the best doc of a band since some kind of monster.Even if you dont like metal music well worth a watch.
This is one of the greatest documentaries I have seen in a LONG time.
As you probably already know, it charts the trials and tribulations of 80's thrash metal band "Anvil".
I was one of those people who knew of Anvil, but never heard any of their material.
If however you don't know Anvil, you will watch this film like me - not knowing much about them. And by the time the end of the film approaches, you will be cheering them on, wishing and hoping that they succeed!
Do they?
You'll have to buy it to see...
I loved this film!
Feel-good film of the year!
