If you enjoy historical epics then steer clear of this abysmal film. Overlong and tedious gibson overacts his way through a totally hysterical and fictitious account of americas birth. Owes more to bald ego than bald eagle. This film trots along like the overweight turkey it is. A truly awful waste of time and money.
If you enjoy the thin red line letting shot with volleys of musket shot and epic battle sequences then this is a spectatular. Unfortunately, and often typical of Hollywood, this is wholly historical inaccurate of the American Revolution (Braveheart is guilty of the same charge) the two lead characters couldn't be further from the truth. Gibson's character was no nice guy often raping his slaves whereas his British counterpart was a genuine philanthropist for the poor. Still, history aside, very entertaining.
If you loved Braveheart you will love this. Great story and also an emotional performance from Gibson. Gibson plays a retired war hero who is very skilled and tuff. Some big battles throughout 'not as big as braveheart' some graphic scenes in the film as well such as soldiers getting legs blown off etc. Long film but it's worth watching as ther is loads of action and great acting. Heath Ledger also stars as Gibsons son who gets caught up in the war. Definatley worth buying for the price.
The story is a wonderful one and as well as all the fighting you would expect in any such film, it also has a great heart-warming family life that runs along superbly. Brilliant acting by all the cast, but especially Mel Gibson and Heath Ledger. It's true that it's a long film, but to my mind, it's one that allows the time to give people the chance to thoroughly enjoy. I can't wait to get a Region 2 to have our own copy.
In 1995 the great Mel Gibson directed and starred in "Braveheart" and then in 2000 this movie came along and had me royally entertained. At nearly 3 hours this movie doesnt get boring for one moment which is down to the epic battles and the great acting especially from Mel Gibson and Heath Ledger who are the father and son serving in the army during the famed american revolution and at times make you wish you were american. Great movie and is a must for all Mel fans. Enjoy
