With Wargames and Tron, Electric Dreams was one of the reasons I end up working in the computer industry :) I enjoy every minute of it and the different and fairy approach of it. I can't wait to see it again in a DVD format. Hopefully someday, someone might remaster it in Blu-Ray :p
Cheesy script, cheesy dialogue, cheesy music, cheesy plot.. All true I'm afraid, but the magic is that it doesn't matter one bit because to see this movie is to fall in love with it.. Romance, tears, and laughter come together in what is one of the truly great eighties' "straight to VHS" flops..
I can't believe it's finally on DVD!.. Big respect to Second Sight for having some guts..
In my opinion the DVD release of "Electric Dreams" is long overdue and Second Sight Films have done a great job in presenting a widescreen version of this seemingly iconic 80s teen movie for everyone to enjoy. Yeah I know the central premise of how Miles the earthquake brick designer meets and falls in love with cello playing Madeline only to have the situation complicated by his highly jealous computer Edgar is hardly the most praiseworthy of premises. Personally I particularly like the way Edgar 'disturbs' Miles' enjoyment of Madeline's participation in an orchestral performance by use of a electronic pocket pager and his 'having fun' whilst Miles is away from his home by playfully teasing a inquisitive dog and then later 'nocturnally annoying the neighbours'. Despite such a undemanding plot it's certainly pleasing, easygoing viewing which I feel is greatly enhanced by worthy location filming and one of the best collection of accompanying songs from some of the hottest 80s artists you'll find which help to elevate "Electric Dreams" above other American comedy films of the era. The original score for this film is another example of the musical genius of Giorgio Moroder, someone whom collaborated on the title track (and subsequent solo album project) with The Human League lead singer Philip Oakey. The four minute promo for "Together In Electric Dreams" is offered as an additional bonus feature accessed from the main menu below the 'Play Feature' and 'Scene Selection' (17 chapters) options, a title screen that replicates the case cover of Miles and Madeline leaning over Alcatraz prison railings with a mischievous Edgar in the middle. On the DVD the film's title logo and computer is separated by scenes from the film set against a looped segment of the Oakey/Moroder musical collaboration, a song I seemingly never get tired of hearing! It's a marvellously satisfying release but it just starts me wondering just how much longer are we going to have to wait for another feature that celebrates the music of the 80s... the long overdue comedy drama "Hunting Venus"!
Ilove this film had it on video a long time been looking for it on dvd now i have. I think its a real romantic comdey a joy to watch especially about a computer that falls in love with a real person lol
This film was about on VHS a few years ago and I was totally endeared by it. When I saw that it was out for release shortly on DVD It went on my must have list. A brilliant family film, fantastic soundtrack and totally watchable again and again.Based on a story called 'do electric sheep have dreams' it revolves around a computer that comes 'alive'. It then tries to take over the central character (Miles) life.
All in all, a classic love triumphs over all story with great music and title soundtrack that brings a lump to my throat every time I hear it.
Well worth watching.
