Writer/director Michael Haneke delivers a masterpiece of unsettlement with Hidden (Cache).
Life seems perfect for Georges (Daniel Auteuil) and Anne (Juliette Binoche), a bourgeois Parisian couple who live in a comfortable home with their adolescent son, Pierrot (Lester Makedonsky). But when an anonymous videotape turns up on their doorstep, showing their house under surveillance from across the street, their calm life begins to spiral out of control. Subsequent videotapes arrive, accompanied by mysterious drawings, and gradually Georges becomes convinced that he's being tormented by a figure from his past. But when he confronts him, the man assures Georges he is innocent. A growing sense of guilt begins to rise in Georges as he recalls his less-than-angelic childhood, yet for some reason he's unable to be completely honest with Anne. Soon, their happy home is an emotional battleground, leading to a climax that is breathtaking in its ferocity and ambiguousness.
Though Haneke's film works first and foremost as an insidious thriller, it is also a powerful commentary on the urban paranoia and racism that continue to permeate modern society. Without using a score, and keeping his camera detached and static, Haneke nonetheless establishes a nearly unbearable level of tension. Not for the squeamish, Hidden remains a work of menacing brilliance, and was the winner of the Best Director award at the 2005 Cannes Film Festival.

Should you like watching something that will make you think and not need to have everything signposted for you, then you'll enjoy this film. There is much meaning to be found within the film, and there is actually a twist at the end if you look for it - previous reviewers on Play obviously haven't! The performances are of a high standard and the direction flawless - this film gets inside you in the most insidious way and makes you question what you saw and your initial gut reaction to it. Certainly not a popcorn movie, but one that rewards careful watching.
Ummm, didn't hit the spot

If I'm honest, I watched this movie because it has won awards and because some people I know have been raving about it. After watching the movie I felt that all the hype was completely unfounded.
I'm not a stupid guy, but this artsy world cinema movie almost makes you feel stupid because you are struggling to find meaning in this movie where nothing much happens at all. But the sooner you realise that there is no real meaning in this pretentious film the quicker you can turn off the DVD and get on with your life. I believe that some people may well enjoy this higly coveted movie, but in my personal opinion anyone with a sensible head on their shoulders will not enjoy this movie at all.
The ending of this movie sums up the whole thing, utterly pointless.
What the critics saw in this movie is definitely hidden!

Long winded and Boring. What could have being a very interesting thriller leaves you sitting there wishing you could have your 109 minutes back. I saw it and managed to stay awake in the hope that the end would have one final brillant twist - it didn't. In fact it ends with Daniel Auteuil going to bed which is where I should have gone 9 minutes into the movie...
