Captain Stanley (Ray Winstone) captures fugitive Burns brothers Charley (Guy Pearce) and Mikey (Richard Wilson) at the scene of bloody rape and murder. Informing Charley that he must kill his older brother, Arthur (Danny Huston), in order to be set free, Stanley drags Mikey to a decrepit jailhouse while he waits for Charley to carry out the deed...

Director John Hillcoat's second collaboration with melancholic musician Nick Cave (here contributing the film's screenplay and soundtrack), is a taut character study of desperation amid the mesmerising backdrop of the 19th century Australian outback.

An haunting and beautiful film with a steller cast!

This is a very good film that will leave you thinking about it hours after you've seen it. The beautiful cinematography and deep characters are brought to life by an excellent cast including Ray Winstone and John Hurt. The story is simple but the outcome is hard to predict and the slow but soulfull scenes will make you are for the characters. This film is a perfect mix of slow stunning scenes and fast pace action. The music is done by Nick Cave so its amazing. If you mixed The Assassination of Jesse James and 3:10 to Yuma this is what you'd get....a great film!!!

 Hillcoat's Masterpiece

Australian cinema is perhaps best known for Picnic at Hanging Rock & Priscilla, Queen of the Desert; certainly not the Western. However, with this genuine masterpiece; the team of John Hillcoat and Nick Cave have created a film which stands as one of the greatest Westerns ever made.
Whilst the storline appears deceptively simple- one man must choose either to murder his older brother, or else his younger sibling will be hung- amongst this narrative sprawls incredibe vistas of the Australian outback, and a chilling soundtrack from Cave himself.
The heart of the film rests on the performance of Guy Pearce as the brother faced with a heart wrenching dilemma, and deliver he does. Neighbours is just a distant memory as Pearce perfectl portrays the torture and turmoil of his decision. The opening scene in which he meets his nemesis (Ray Winstone) so to speak, is a masterclass in inner rage and deserves to be a key scene for any acting student
Anyone expecting wild shootouts a la The Wild Bunch may be disappointed, but if you are in search of a true modern classic then The Proposition deserves this status.

The difference between this film and alot of other films is that it is written by a rock legend,Nick Cave. There's a great story that revolves around three Irish brothers in the Australian outback, one's in prison, one's a wanted psychopath and the other must save the younger one in prison by killing his older, psychotic brother.Top notch cast including Guy Pearce,Danny Huston,John Hurt,Emily Watson and Ray Winstone.Great bonus features on the dvd aswell :-)

One more crack about the Irish, Mr. Lamb, and I'll shoot you

An entertaining enough film, but it's one of those films that doesn't quite know which story it wants to tell.

The storyline involving Guy Pearce and Danny Huston does the trick - tense, bold, funny - exactly what the film needs. Because when the cameras are on Ray Winstone and Emily Watson they may as well not even be switched on.

Winstone and Watson are such terrific actors that to see them in roles so obviously unsuited to them is the hugely disappointing downfall of the film.

Also, the lighting is a bit off and the script isn't particularly refreshingly done.

I have been told to watch this film by a few people, but I already wanted to see it and bought it, and I can honestly say, Money Well Spent. This film is fantastic, great story, great dialogue, great directing. It's a brilliantly cast, set and framed film with such an incredible atmosphere blended with the perfect soundtrack.
It's a Western at the core, with a gruff, tattered, violent theme.

Fantastic film.
