Captain Stanley (Ray Winstone) captures fugitive Burns brothers Charley (Guy Pearce) and Mikey (Richard Wilson) at the scene of bloody rape and murder. Informing Charley that he must kill his older brother, Arthur (Danny Huston), in order to be set free, Stanley drags Mikey to a decrepit jailhouse while he waits for Charley to carry out the deed...
Director John Hillcoat's second collaboration with melancholic musician Nick Cave (here contributing the film's screenplay and soundtrack), is a taut character study of desperation amid the mesmerising backdrop of the 19th century Australian outback.

The difference between this film and alot of other films is that it is written by a rock legend,Nick Cave. There's a great story that revolves around three Irish brothers in the Australian outback, one's in prison, one's a wanted psychopath and the other must save the younger one in prison by killing his older, psychotic brother.Top notch cast including Guy Pearce,Danny Huston,John Hurt,Emily Watson and Ray Winstone.Great bonus features on the dvd aswell :-)

This movie is pure poetry. Very well written, beautifully shot, and excellent performances by the cast. It's very different from your average western, and i mean that in a good way. A brutal epic in small proportions! I can't recommend it enough.
One more crack about the Irish, Mr. Lamb, and I'll shoot you

An entertaining enough film, but it's one of those films that doesn't quite know which story it wants to tell.
The storyline involving Guy Pearce and Danny Huston does the trick - tense, bold, funny - exactly what the film needs. Because when the cameras are on Ray Winstone and Emily Watson they may as well not even be switched on.
Winstone and Watson are such terrific actors that to see them in roles so obviously unsuited to them is the hugely disappointing downfall of the film.
Also, the lighting is a bit off and the script isn't particularly refreshingly done.
