After the series was cancelled, and a less than auspicious return in the form of Star Trek: The Motion Picture, director Nicholas Meyer hit upon a genius idea.
He took a villain from a classic 2 parter and returned him to the franchise. Explaining all his background and motivations in dialogue, so no refilming for flashbacks was required, Khan Noonian Singh escapes from exile on city alpha five. Forgotten by those that exiled him, and armed with a stolen federation warship and knowledge of the existnece of the Genesis Device, Khan puts his genetically engineered superior intelligence to work on a plot of revenge.
He tasks me! He tasks me, and I shall have him!
This film is an absolute classic, from the tactics employed in the cat and mouse ship battles to the Kobeyashi Maru references, and turned Star Trek back into a going concern. More than that, it changed the way sci-fi was made. Star Wars established the high quality block buster, Wrath of Khan established the link from cinema to television.
Yes some of the effects are ropey 25 years on, and anyone with access to wikipedia can point out the flaw in the depiction of the 'nebula' on screen, but the film is still engaging and enjoyable. Filled with classic lines and plenty of excitement, and best watched in the extended version for the additional character depth if you can get it.
This sequel to the Star Trek movie franchise is one of the classics! this movie takes place all about Khan, who comes from Botany Bay prison
This is a great buy and a excellent brilliant movie! to the star trek franchise, if you are a Trekkie, this is for you!
Even if you don't watch Star Trek or consider it 'geeky', you should give this film a try. Filled with Shakepearian concepts like betrayal, love, friendship, power and ,of course, the awesome monologues of such power.
Ricardo Montalban plays the villainous Khan awesomly well, and his deathly last monologue makes you fear his every word.
