Review

The movie is the first in a series of 6 feature-length films that Cristi Puiu will direct, entitled Stories From the Suburbs of Bucharest.

Mr. Lazarescu is a 63 year old man who shares his apartment with his three cats. Suffering from pains in his head and stomach he calls an ambulance and whilst he waits, asks his neighbours for some pills. Though they disapprove of his heavy drinking and the state of his home, they try their best to help. Hindered by a major bus accident the medics eventually arrive and so begins a long and increasingly frustrating night.

Shuffled from pillar to post be becomes wearier and weaker in the face of the medical professions bureaucracy and casual inefficiency. A succession of colourful characters permeates the film and the combination of dry humour and 'scapel sharp' satire makes this one of the years most deeply affecting films.

This film is about an old alcoholic in Bucharest who is pretty much left to die on a trolley in various hospitals as no-one has any room for him. This hardly sounds like a film to recommend but trust me it is. I was fascinated by this film and would urge you to see it. It is so watchable!! The film is beautifully shot (with a touch of the Michael Mann) but it is the actors who really bring it to life. There are some outrageusly arrogant and very funny Docters who anyone who has visited an NHS hospital will recognise. Everyone will also have next door neighbours like the unfortunate Mr Lazerescu! (Another, not so high brow, reason to watch this film is some of the Romanian actresses in this are amongst the most beautiful women I have ever seen, partcualry the nurse who gives Mr Lazerescu a CT scan!!)

This is not a laugh out loud comedy but it is full of black humour and issues that effect us on the other side of Europe the same as it effects Romanians. Trust me, watch it!!
