There are good reasons I voted for a one Star,
the graphics may be nice and flashy and there may be lots of guns involved, but that doesn't even come close to redeeming this movie's fatal error - The raping of Doom.
Doom was about an aerospace agency experimenting with dimensional gateways and thus opening a portal to Hell, spilling demons out that soon started warring with mankind.
This movie, is just another genetic experiment sprinter zombie movie, as if we didn't have enough, and the classical zombie wasn't defiled plenty. Still that isn't nearly as much of an atrocity as completely discarding everything that's Doom, or well, they have retained some resemblances with Doom as they said. Resemblances like them having guns, and them having to shoot bad guys. It's nothing but another poor movie about a bunch of roughnecks with big boomsticks fighting with more sprinter zombies, hence I vote to rename this movie to "Resident Evil 2: RE on Mars" and stop this good for nothing possé of "actors and scriptwriters" from dragging themselves down along with Doom's fame because they can't produce anything good of their own.
If you have ever played Doom then you will probably find the film very disappointing, if not then you may get some enjoyment out of the it. Either way there is no doubting that the film is still below average.
Doom sees Dwight 'The Rock' Johnson as a marine commander and his troops investigating strange goings on with a space station on......Mars. Changing the premise of the original game, which took place on earth and had you battling the minions of hell in their various guises, drastically affects the story and apart from a couple of aesthetics Doom fans will find little that will look even similar to the game and may struggle to come to terms with the changes. The only thing that is similar is the inclusion of the BFG 9000 (you know what that stands for) and a 3 minute first person shoot em up style camera towards the end of the film which, although being very entertaining and giving fans a little of what they want, it all seems to come a little too late.
This is its biggest down fall as a good conversation of this game would have made it a lot more popular and a lot better as the story is already well established. It is yet again another case of a poor conversation from a classic game. As a film itself there are a couple of moments that do excite, especially for Sci-Fi fans such as the virtual walls and how they get to Mars in the first place. But whilst the special effects do impress there is still one big thing that this film doesn't have and it was probably the most intrinsic element of the game, fear. Whilst playing Doom you feared what was around the next corner, especially when you could hear a door opening somewhere and not knowing what had been released or where it was. Places where you had previously cleared would become re-infected with hells minions and you could never rest on your laurels. This coupled with some very disturbing level designs, images and sound effects as well of moments of being in almost total darkness really built up a tremendous amount of tension and dread. The film quite simply has none of those moments and so in this area the audience, and Doom fans in particular, are let down badly. In this respect the director and script writers should really have at least played the game and focused on those key elements as it looks like they have just stolen the name and thought of their own ideas.
This also feels very similar to John Carpenters Ghost of Mars not only because of the setting but the fact that both films showed a lot of promise but just didn't deliver on any of the essential ingredients that they tried to add in and, more importantly, it has left fans extremely frustrated with a film that bears little resemblance to their favourite game. I would love to see this film done again properly and stick to the story as I think it would be a really great film.
I personally thought this was rather a cool sci-fi monster movie, Doom is meant to be based upon the popular video game and does feature many thing from the game but adds a bit of original story to it as well, the story was actually very good though, the effects are creepy and it has some cool looking monsters and demons, the cast is pretty decent and has some top names like the Rock, Karl Urban and the lovely Rosamund pike. If you enjoy a good sci-fi story then check it out.
The mystery and misery of game-to-film translated atrocities continues with Doom, a movie that takes the cosmetics of Doom the game and the bare bones of a shallow action movie.
While it has a passing resemblance to the game, the story deviates to the point of total obscurity. In fact the minimalistic story becomes so difficult to follow it becomes pointless. What I DO understand is that the writers tried to rid us of the original plot and only due to pressure from fans did they base the movie on Mars - fundamental to the Doom franchise. The monsters are now scientific abominations rather than hell-risen demons and the heavy armoured military are now lightly clad SWAT-type goons.
One scene in particular that almost sent me walking out the cinema was the fight between the 'Hell Knight' mutant replacement and the big black guy who seemingly doesn't weaken no matter what crippling attack is thrown at him. Electrocute him, smash his face, break his back - doesn't stop this guy.
HOWEVER, there are some reasons to give this movie a peek. The Pinky demon, sorry mutant, bears a resemblance to the original design and is pretty cool -although again, unnecessary changes were made that weakens the character, such as wheels instead of back legs. The much talked about FPS moment is fun, if forced, and Karl Urban is likable and generally tries his best.
What alludes everyone except for Hollywood is why they change everything that made the original brand so good. If you're not a fan of the Doom games, there's no reason to watch this movie - there's endless supply of better action sci-fi out there and if you are a fan of the Doom games you might want to give it a chance.
Just because people are fans of the game does not mean this film deserves any less of a rating. It should be rated as an independant film.
I have played the original. I think this film is a great tie in to the game. I also think it is more suited to those who have played or do like that genre. I don't know why but anyone I ask who has seen it says they didn't like it that much. None of them have played the game right enough.
Without the Rock this film would only be half as good. The rest of the cast is very good aswell. There are some good gags, great gun fights, good special effects and action sequences. It is an all round good film.
As I say if you are unfimilar with Doom or the Zombieesque type genre then you might not like the film as much. But if like me you do, I recommend you see it.
