Review

78-year-old Carl Fredricksen has always dreamed of seeing the rainforests of South America. To achieve this, Carl comes up with the spectacular scheme of tying thousands of balloons to his house and floating around the world. However, upon take-off he realises he has a stowaway; Russell, an 8 year old who has the same intrepid instinct as Carl.

Winner of the Academy Awards for Best Animated Feature & Best Original Score.

Play.com review

Every year there's one animated film that goes beyond just being a kids' film or cartoon comedy and becomes a classic in its own right. This is what Pixar is all about. In 2007, Ratatouille took the plaudits; 2008 saw Wall-E whirr and click its way to immortality; and 2009 belongs to Up.

Funny, thrilling and touching, Up is the story of widower Carl Fredricksen, a man who is looking for the adventure that he and his wife never had. A floating house, talking dogs and a giant bird of paradise all cross Carl's path in a typical Pixar production, bursting with creativity, funny lines and characters that kids and grown-ups will love.

Up is in safe hands with writer and director Pete Docter, responsible for Toy Story, Toy Story 2, Monsters Inc. and Wall-E. The voice acting of Edward Asner (Elf), Christopher Plummer (9 and The Imaginarium Of Dr Parnassus) and John Ratzenberger (Cars) also lends the film real class. Up is the animated adventure of 2009 - we look forward to Toy Story 3 taking a shot at 2010's crown...

If you enjoyed Disney Pixar's Up then check out some other classics from the awesome animation studio!

Toy Story: One of the best movies of all-time, Pixar's debut is a stunningly imaginative, incredibly funny take on the secret life of toys.

Toy Story 2: When Woody is 'toynapped', the gang must rescue their lost buddy before Andy returns home from camp.

Cars: Paul Newman and Owen Wilson lend their talents to this charming adventure about a regretful race car.

Wall-E: If cute robots, alien encounters and incredible animation are what you're after then watch this charming and thought-provoking film.

Monsters Inc.: The monster world receives a visit from a tiny toddler, setting off a hilarious chain of events.

When I normally see a Disney movie, I get what I expect - a fairly predictable storyline that is pretty much middle of the road. This film took me by suprise. The start of the film was fantastic, showing both humour and a real sensitivity. I agree, the storyline was a little unusual, but isn't that good for a change?? I certainly don't agree that elements to the story were unsuitable for children - I think all age groups will love it!
