The highway in this long stretch of nowhere stretches for miles across a windy, barren landscape. The never-ending horizon seems to retreat the closer you get, and if a car broke down here it might take forever for someone to notice.

In the midst of it, Officers Jack Bennett and Jim Conrad, sit dangerously bored and dreaming of the kind of glory that can only come with a serial killer or maniac on the loose.

By the time Federal Officers Elizabeth Anderson and Sam Hallaway arrive the next day, a string of violent murders does in fact appear to be plaguing the lonely road. The police are straining at the bit to get back out and apprehend the murderers, but the Feds work differently. In order to uncover the truth of the case, Anderson and Hallaway first have to take their witnesses back - back to what happened when their lives intersected.

A few details slowly emerge: Officers Bennett and Conrad were checking the horizon for speeders, Bobbi and Johnny were in the cherry Duster, tearing the highway up and having fun.

Little Stephanie's family stage wagon was cruising too, with her mom and new step-dad busy singing in the front seat and her brother David next to her in the back. The problem was, as Stephanie saw it, that adults never listen to little kids, no matter how many times she tried to tell them what she saw out the window. Perhaps if they had, it would all have turned out differently.

As the Feds slowly expose the fragile little details each witness conceals so carefully with a well practiced lie, the 'truth' they are looking for starts to extract an enormous price no one expected.

 An excellent thriller

Surveillance is essentially a road movie about a bunch of people travelling a stretch of highway through the back roads of America who become either witness to, or directly/ indirectly involved in a trail of murderous events. A slow burning plot is driven along by an array of weird and corrupt characters, none of whom seem to be telling the truth.
What i really liked is the way we hear each characters testimony but simultaneously get to see the actual events behind their words unfold and not the lies they are telling. That drew me into story and kept me guessing til the very end. Don't expect any action cause there isn't any but keep watching cause you will be rewarded with a clever story and a nice twist at the end. If you enjoyed The Hitcher or No Country For Old Men then i reckon you will like this.

What you see is what you get.

Top 100 Music Reviewer

Of the fifty odd films I have taken the trouble to see on the big screen this year, 'Surveillance' certainly ranks amongst the most interesting. Jennifer Lynch has certainly taken a long time to follow up the notorious 'Boxing Helena' and anyone who has seen that film might be surprised that this effort, while hardly mainstream fare, has such a cohesive narrative and never threatens to disappear up its own fundament as some of her dear father's recent efforts have. Recommended, and to the authors of the 1 star reviews, learn to spell check and maybe your opinions might be taken slightly more seriously.

 Different.

This film has a bit of a slow start, but at least you are kept interested. I have to say that this is a very different film to what I had expected. I would not call it a thriller, but more a drama. It also has an unusual style and different to any film I've seen before. I see that is was directed by Jennifer Chambers Lynch, and executive producer, David Lynch. There has to be a connection? Anyway, the film is not anywhere as weird as a David Lynch film, and to my mind, well worth a watch.

 Impressive

Was very pleasantly surprised by this film as i had read some not so great reviews, Surveillance is full of atmosphere and suspense, keeps you guessing and has some really great performances, particularly from Pullman and Ormond. If you like a good thriller with a pretty quirky twist at the end then you will enjoy this.

 dull

not the "edge of your seat" thriller i was expecting. the twist was ridiculous and the story was dragged out making the film seem empty and dull. the gory scenes were realistic, but overall i would not recommend this movie.
