He's the star of the show, but he doesn't know. Jim Carrey wowed critics and audiences alike as unwitting Truman Burbank in this marvel of a movie from director Peter Weir about a man whose life is a non-stop TV show.

Truman doesn't realise that his quaint hometown is a giant studio set run by a visionary producer/director/creator (Ed Harris), that folks living and working there are Hollywood actors, that even his incessantly bubbly wife is a contract player. Gradually, Truman gets wise. And what he does about his discovery will have you laughing, crying and cheering like few film stories ever have.

Nominated for a multitude of awards including Best Actor at the Oscars, Jim Carrey bagged a prestigious Golden Globe award for his efforts as Truman Burbank.

For an actor more usually associated with comic roles "The Truman Show" most likely took people quite by surprise as it did me when I initially watched it at the cinema (thanks to competition prize tickets I won!). Alternating between comedic and dramatically moving this feels like a rather unique viewing experience where the entire life of the character that Jim Carrey portrays (that of Truman Burbank) is part of a reality TV show televised and broadcast for the entire world to see. With arguably such an almost iconic film as this I was delighted to see it eventually gain a worthy 'special edition' release replete with a collection of specially created extras. So how much do we get? Well the making of feature under the title "How's it going to end?" which is split into 2 parts running to about 42 minutes effectively covers pretty much all aspects of the film whilst a second feature 'Faux Finishing' (about 13 minutes) focuses on the visual effects element of "The Truman Show". You've also got roughly 13 minutes of Deleted/Extended scenes, a couple of trailers and tv spots plus a photo gallery containing 40 images. As a single disc release I personally am more than happy with the contents which certainly does true justice to a unique, enjoyable, moving and at times thought provoking film and is a worthy addition to my DVD collection.

The Truman Show (1999) - *****
A brilliant look at what it is to be human, full of humour, emotion and enough satire to to sink a battleship. Carrey's performance as the titular Truman is inspired, as is great support from Ed Harris and Laura Linney. An intelligent, engrossing and hugely uplifting classic.

This is Jim Carreys second best performance to date (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind being his best) he is a revelation in this film. If you have only seen Jim Carrey in Comedies upto now you will be amazed by his performance in this film.

The concept of this film is great. You really just have to watch it. A film for anyone, even if your not a fan of Jim Carreys usual films.

 Excellent, and prophetic

I don't know how a reviewer called KeanoComedy could say this film is boring. Not only is it funny, witty, and full of inventions: it is also prophetic, telling a story which is striking and modern even 9 years after the film's first release. Peter Weir is a great director, Andrew Niccol an intelligent screenwriter (though I'm sure that Weir has re-arranged many things, as usual) and the former idiot Jim Carrey is as good as a classic film star. Anyway, if you don't like Weir/Niccol/Carrey, you're sure going to love this film. Watch it more than once: each time it reveals something new. Cheers. - and, of course, buy the Special Edition if you can afford it: so much funny stuff in it!

Taking reality TV taken to its ultimate extreme everything Truman Burbank has done since birth has been seen live by a worldwide audience of millions. Unfortunately for Truman he is unaware of this as he lives inside a giant Hollywood dome containing a made for TV town. Everyone in his life, his friends, his neighbours, even his wife are all actors hired by the shows creator.

Jim Carrey is unusually reserved, but brilliant in the title role importantly making Truman likeable so that we really begin to feel for him as the movie reaches its climax. Part satire, part comedy and part drama The Truman Show is one of those rare movies that takes an original, intelligent and interesting concept and truly makes the most out of it. It is rare for a film to entertain whilst also making you think but this is one movie that certainly manages it.
