Review

Wow. Fans of Cecil B. DeMille and the story of the Ten Commandments look no further. Your prayers have been answered. This fantastic 3-disc set features DeMille's original silent version from 1923, as well as his blockbuster epic filmed in 1956 with Charlton Heston as Moses.

The Ten Commandments (1956): For sheer pageantry and spectacle, few motion pictures can claim to equal the splendour of Cecil B. DeMille's 1956 remake of his epic The Ten Commandments (1923), which follows the life story of Moses, played to perfection by Charlton Heston. Nina Foch is Bithiah, the Princess who rescues Moses and Yul Brynner is Rameses. The film also features a rare appearance by director Cecil B. DeMille.

After the Pharaoh orders all Hebrew family first-born to be killed, Moses' mother puts the infant in a cradle to float downstream, away from danger. The baby is rescued by Princess Bithiah and raised over the next thirty years in the Royal Egyptian Palace where he is in a constant struggle with his brother, Rameses.

Beautifully produced and choreographed, 12,000 extras and 15,000 animals were used during the filming to create memorable scenes including the exodus when Moses leads the Hebrew people to freedom, and the chariot scene when Rameses chases the trail of freed slaves. Prizing an Oscar for best effects and nominations for many more, The Ten Commandments is an epic of its time and is probably still one of the biggest productions in motion picture history!

The Ten Commandments (1923) (Silent): DeMille's original version of the story which would cement his place in celluloid history as a director of magnificent spectacle. This silent version is a true testament to his talents and shows the considerable power of early cinema.
