Upon watching King Kong, you may well be slightly confused. You will have been amazed by the sheer beauty of the cinematography but still not quite satisfied. Or maybe 'too satisfied' would be a better term. This film is, simply, far too long. It doubles the running time of the original with seemingly no reason. Despite this, you won't feel like you know the characters any better, so the hour before we reach the island (yes, a whole hour) can be quite off-putting and for me really upsets the pace.

But as I mentioned, this film does look incredible, the CGI creating some gorgeous visuals. There is however an over-reliance on this, and Jackson made the classic mistake of not knowing when to hold back. A good example is the dinosaur stampede, purely in the film for the sake of it. The blending of the actors on to the blue screen backgrounds also looks very shoddy in this scene. But Kong himself is a work is pure brilliance, the amount of emotion in his face is incredible. The film is certainly worth a look, just prepare for a long one.

Customer rating: 1 out of 5 stars Offensively Bad.

Many directors have tried to capture the magic of 'King Kong' since it's epic original in 1933 and all have failed, but Peter Jackson's attempt is just diabolical. I think everybody forgets that Jackson isn't responsible for the CGI in his films, he directs the CGI by a green screen but he doesn't make it. The best films he has directed are his first two, 'Braindead' and 'Bad Taste', because they are incredibly stupid but entertaining.
This film isn't even anything like the original, the script is filled with pointless little extras and the film is 3 hours long which feels like 100 hours.
The cast for this film is ridiculous also. Naomi Watts and Adrien Brody are fine but Jack Black? Why?
If anyone was going to re-make 'King Kong', it should have been Guillermo Del Toro. Thank god he's making 'The Hobbit' rather than Jackson.
I admit, the CGI in this film is impressive, but the entire film relies on it. Nearly everything in this film is made by computer programmes. If your making a CGI animation picture then that's fantastic but this film was meant to be taken seriously, and I for one just couldn't do that.
I just hope Jackson's next film, 'The Lovely Bones' is better than his others.

I can't say enough good things about this movie, from the special effects to the casting. If your looking for a good long movie to watch on a Saturday night, look no further.

This film was much better than I thought it would be.
Some people say that it started far too slowly, but I found it very entertaining throughout, and I'm normally one to get restless in long films.
The special effects are amazing, and King Kong himself looks fantastic. Brilliant acting all round and very well written.
Highly Recommended.

It was hyped up and I think that's what made this film so poor, and maybe the fact it was so bloody long!!!!

Some good performances from the actors and king kong looks very real, but I'm afraid the numb backside that I received was not worth it.

Save your money and rent it or borrow off a friend.

When i first heard about this movie i thought i would not like it but after i went to see it with my sister i thought it was really good. I like the story and some of the scenes are good. I have not seen the original King Kong so i can not compare them. For £5.99 you cant go wrong.

Customer rating: 4 out of 5 stars Don't believe the hype, but don't believe the venom.

Top 100 DVD Reviewer

For better or for worse, this is yet another attempt to recapture for a modern audience what folks got from that 1933 original, and lets face it you're kind of doomed before you even start really, the original was like nothing anyone had ever seen before, but this Peter Jackson version has a damned good stab at it!

The non stop pace once the action gets going, the huge sets that stretch into the distance (model shots mainly but so were the original's), the creepy creatures and constant sense of jeapordy for our heroine, and a feast for the eyes ending in a big finale on the Empire State building, it's all here.

However, criticisms of it's length and pace are well aimed, it takes FOREVER to get going, I mean literally over an hour before we even get to the island, and I was BORED and NOT looking forward to another two hours of this and I will probably be using my fast forward button on 2nd viewing, which is not the best recommendation lets face it, and yes, some of the scenes over-reach themselves technically and end up looking like a bunch of folks running on treadmills in front of green screen back projections of obviously key-framed CGI effects, and there's a very good reason for that as you get to see on the extras.

But all in all this isn't that bad, it does damn well in fact, having recently seen both films (I shall ignore the other 9-10 movies that bear the name Kong) the original 1933 version still has the better pacing, but of course this Peter Jackson version has the better effects and greater visual feast, Kong himself is crafted with evident love for the character and the facial animation and general attention to detail is at times dazzling, and we may I think be being far too fussy to expect editorial perfection just because it's a Peter Jackson movie, and to those who are being hyper-critical of this film just because it has evident undeniable faults, as a whole package this DVD is still well worth the asking price for the entertainment and extras it provides!

I would definitely recommend it!
