Compelling, complex, gripping and genuinely disturbing, The Red Riding Trilogy is a breathtaking, neo-noir epic based on horrific, factual events and adapted for the screen by Tony Grisoni (Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas, Tideland) from David Peace's series of groundbreaking novels.

The Red Riding Trilogy follows controversial stories revolving around the manhunt for the brutal Yorkshire Ripper. After a failed attempt to crack Fleet Street, a cynical journalist returns to his homeland of Yorkshire and finds himself assigned to report on the case of a local girl who has gone missing. But after her bizarrely mutilated body is discovered, he is thrown into a sleaze infested, nightmarish world of corruption. As the killer's identity remains a mystery, savage events spiral out of control, spanning generations and leading to a shocking climax.

The three films (1974, 1980 and 1983) are directed by three different filmmakers, Julian Jarrold (Becoming Jane), James Marsh (Academy Award® Winner 2009 for Man On Wire) and Anand Tucker (Hilary &
Jackie
), and each boasts a fantastic British cast. Sean Bean (Lord Of The Rings) joins Mark Addy (The Full Monty), Warren Clarke (TV's Dalziel and Pascoe), Paddy Considine (Dead Man's Shoes), Andrew Garfield (Boy A), Rebecca Hall (Vicky Cristina Barcelona), David Morrissey (The Other Boleyn Girl), Peter Mullan (Trainspotting) and Maxine Peake (TV's Shameless).

Channel 4's trilogy of films based on David Peace's Yorkshire crime quartet will haunt and shock even the hardest of men. Gritty from the offset, the fictional series focuses on the police corruption within the West Yorkshire Constabulary, and how they tortured and murdered suspects to benefit their own means.
The triology focuses on two principle cases: the mutilation and murder of young girls (1974), and the Yorkshire Ripper murders (1980). The third installment (1983) serves to tie up any loose ends from the previous two films (or cases), chronologically frantic like a Tarantino film as it skips before and after each major event in the two cases.
Influenced by infamous West Midlands Serious Crime Squad whose entire career was shrouded in scandal and corruption, this Trilogy captures every bit of discomfort and disgust at the police techniques, leaving the viewer feeling utterly helpless, unable to turn to the one force entasked with protection and the safety of 'the people'.
The acting is absolutely top-notch, with the British actors proving that their acting chops, blended with a great script and insightful direction, can compete with the great series' being churned out over the pond. Particular mention to David Morissey and Sean Harris, who are so utterly convincing that you wonder if they could play anyone else.
Recommended for all crime fans - although perhaps restricted to those with a slightly stronger stomach; it doesn't get any darker than this.

 Truly amazing

I was really looking forward to watching this on Channel 4 and while I was watching Episode 1 and Episode 2,I felt a little disappointed.......BUT.......when I sat back and thought about them after they'd finished,I realised just how brilliant they were!!
This is VERY dark and not always a pleasant watch by any means, but always engrossing,so many interwoven subplots, you can't look away in case you miss something,no matter how small it seems at the time. This trilogy is absolute quality and I'd recommend it,but be advised,it's material is as dark as it gets!!Enjoy!!

 Deliciously Dark!

This trilogy is a masterpiece and has more twists and turns than a rollercoaster! It is a MUST SEE and the final episode is so fiendishly clever that it knocks your socks off. I can't wait to get my hands on a copy.

 Stunning....
