 Some of the best Sci-Fi

The Next Generation is where the resurgence in Sci-Fi began, all those years ago in 1987. It is great to watch them again. There is absolutely no point in me talking about Star Trek, you will either know about it or not so I will talk briefly about this season.
There is nothing missing on the disks between this version and the full boxed versions.

The entire cast put in amazing performances and really make this series as good as it is.

Season 5 again surpasses the previous season on quality of both production and effects. Basically this is more of season 4, but better and with more developed antagonists.

This season continues the quality, with plenty of excellent episodes, notably "Cause and Effect" (basically imagine Groundhog Day in space) which is a really unique and fun episode. This season also introduces the character of Ro Laren, the Bajoran who becomes a member of the Enterprise crew, who is played wonderfully by Michelle Forbes. Quite a few episodes this season feature Ten Forwards bar tender Guinan. I always enjoy scenes involving this character as she is played pitch perfect every time by Whoopi Goldberg. Always dispensing wise advice or information she is certainly one of my favourite characters.

Other good episodes include "Conundrum" (where the Enterprise crew lose their memory and can't remember who they are), "Powerplay" (Troi, Data and O'Brien are possessed and take command of the ship), "Darmok" (Picard must learn to communicate with an alien being), "The Perfect Mate" (Stars Famke Janssen, who would later go on to star alongside Patrick Stewart in the X-Men films, where she played Jean Grey), "Ethics" (Worf is severely injured and wishes to end his life) is a good episode dealing with a contentious subject and asks some difficult questions. Leonard Nimoy stars as Spock in the two part episode "Reunification", while in the episode "The Game" Wesley returns....and look out for a young Ashley Judd in one of her first acting roles. Wesley is also in another episode which is quite good called "First Duty" (Wesley is caught up in a tragic accident at Starfleet Academy). Three other note worthy episodes are "I, Borg" (The Enterprise rescues a Borg drone and Picard must contend with his desire for revenge against the enemy who abused him. This episode has various repercussions which will make themselves known in a later episode. Picard's desire for revenge against the Borg, also resurfaces in the excellent film Star Trek: First Contact), "Inner Light" (A mysterious incident causes Picard to wake up living a life as another man on an alien world), and finally the two part season finale "Time's Arrow" (A great little time travel yarn where the crew go back to 19th century San Francisco).

Season 5 is overall excellent, and possibly the best season. The only downside I found was the episode where Troi's mother Lwaxana (played by Majel Barret) returns. I find her an incredibly irritating harridan. I think a good episode would have been if someone had grabbed a phaser, set it to kill and fired it at her. All she ever does in episodes is interfere and generally never shuts up

 The Worse So Far

I have to admit, that I didn't think that anything could be worse than series 4, but sadly I have been made to a look a fool of.

Although the quality of acting is still here, there is just something missing from this series that just cannot put my finger on.

Like all series there have been good and bad episodes, but for this series it mainly seems like background noise, unless you are a major trekkie.

Some of the episodes are very good, but the majority have been reasonably substandard compared to some of the other series.

Normally I have been in bed on the laptop before midnigh watching episodes, but I am sat at the business computer, at 4am writing this review, so you do the maths.

I shall goto bed soon and put on an episode but this really has been average for me.
