Masters of horror Wes Craven and Sean Cunnigham revisit their landmark film that launched Craven's directing career and influenced decades of horror to follow: The Last House On The Left. Bringing one of the most notorious thrillers of all time to a new generation, they produce the story that explores how far two ordinary people will go to exact revenge on the sociopaths who harmed their child.

The night she arrives at the remote Collingwood lakehouse, Mari (Sara Paxton) and her friend are kidnapped by a prison escapee and his crew. Terrified and left for dead, Mari's only hope is to make it back to parents John and Emma (Tony Goldwyn and Monica Potter). Unfortunately, her attackers unknowingly seek shelter at the one place she could be safe. And when her family learns the horrifying story, they will make three strangers curse the day they came to The Last House On The Left.

Disturbing film, one of the better remakes

| | See all adamjenksfilmbuff's reviews (7)

First thing I feel I have to mention is that this can be a hard film to watch in places, a bit like 'Eden Lake'. I am a huge horror fan, so don't think that I did'nt know what I was about to watch! There are graphic scenes of violence, which is pretty normal for today's horrors, but there is a rape scene which I feel went on for FAR too long, hence why this film does not deserve the 5 star treatment.

I can understand that they wanted to portray the violence towards the girls as realistic and close to today's crimes in society, but they could have made that paticular scene a lot shorter. They build the tension before that scene brilliantly I have to say.

Overall the film is dark, disturbing, and exactly what I hoped for with this worthwhile remake. As I said in the title, one of the better recent remakes. If you have seen the original, Wes Craven has done his original film justice.

 "..classic Horror.."

The original movie was so long ago, it may have been controversial at the time but is so dated now and is practicly garbage! so it needed a reboot so bad, and I have to say they have done a very good job, theres plenty of violence to keep the horror and gorehounds happy, the story is similar with the usual changes that you would expect from a remake, overall its a well made film with plenty of tense gross-out moments, with the ultimate payoff at the end.

 Bloody revenge... served cold...

Wes Craven's original controversial movies launched him into the spotlight so that he could make some of todays classic horror movies, the 1972 version was great for its time but has not aged so well, so this fairly decent remake is truly welcome.

The 1972 version is both graphic and disturbing and this remake stays true to that, further exemplifying the horrors of modern day america but just overly expanding on it. Its not for the squeamish or the faint hearted there are some uncomfortable senes that will shock people, so if you're easily upset its not the film for you.

The leads are great and every charecter gets their time to shine, the tension builds as the two girls come face to face with a sinister gang and try to escape at every opportunity, its tense stuff and you actually begin to fear for the girls, Garrett Dillahunt is great as the gang leader and wil have you trembling.

The film is'nt really a horror at all, the first half plays like a tense thriller and the second half a revenge flick, with the girls parents exacting their revenge on the gang wich lead to some bloody confrontations.

Overall though, its a great remake of the original film which has worn with time with extra blood and less music, you will either enjoy if ou know what you're going into ot you'll be sick to your stomach, watch at your own risk...

The original 1972 Wes Craven original was in need for a face lift, as it really did seem amature and grotty. This remake is a surprise, as this updated version actually improves on many aspects of the original film, it's far better acted, the tension is built up very well, and there is better written characters leading to a nasty but very rewarding thriller. Of course you could nit pick by saying that the original amatureish vision gave it the edge as it was like watching a snuff film, but at least this new version does not have a illjudged musical interlude. Of course the film will be hated by so called seriouse critics, but this film sets it's sights at being a straight forward revenge film, and it does it all very well.
If your a fan of the cult original, don't be put off by thinking it's another no brainer remake, this a very good rethink, and although I would not say it's enjoyable viewing, you do find your self rooting for the parents as they set out on their bloody revenge. The only slight letdown was the silly head in the microwave ending, as it seemed it was out of place with the rest of the film. Why use a microwave when a chainsaw would do the job better!

 Great remake

This is a very worthy remake of the classic Last House on the Left.

It retains the disturbing feel of the original and kept my attention gripped from start to finish.

Yes, some of the violence is graphic and is likely to leave many viewers feeling uneasy and sick...BUT it is such a nice change to have a movie these days that does provoke a physical reaction from the viewer.

The only slight criticism I have is with the casting. The guy who played Krug didn't make him seem commanding and overbearing enough, in the way David Hess did in the original.
