You have to give the show credit for being one of the first shows to really concentrate on openly gay characters and base a show around them, and for many years this sitcom was really, really good.

Will & grace themselves were intermittently interesting, eric mccormack's will was actually the dullest character, but the outstanding comedic ability of debra messing and her physicality in the role was much more satisfying. No, the real stars were always jack & karen (sean hayes and megan mullally) - the character of rich, spoiled, pill-popping, alcholic yet razor sharp karen was comedy gold, and they really got the majority of the (often genius) lines.

But it should only have gone for 5 seasons. It took up to the second to get into it's stride, 3 and 4 were it's best and 5 was where it began to rely on (astonisingly high-profile) guest stars and instead of an actual plot, just had one-liner after one-liner. Seasons 6, 7 and 8 declined drastically in that respect (except for the fun 'live' episode they did) and while it still had it's moments i can honestly say that when i watched the final episode i think i barely even laughed once - it was the single worst episode of television i have ever seen, and reminded me just how far the show had fallen.

But i do enjoy it's golden run in the middle. That was just where it should have ended.

Will & Grace wasn't the best sitcom in the world (that honour goes to Frasier!) but it was pretty damned funny and worth watching for the fued between Megan Mullally and Minnie Driver alone. The humour goes from being Frasier-esque sharpness to Monty Python-esque obsudity and the blink of an eye and is brilliantly paid off each time.
