"You don't understand. I coulda had class. I coulda been a contender. I coulda been somebody, instead of a bum, which is what I am, let's face it." - Terry Malloy (Marlon Brando)
Marlon Brando is the longshoreman who finds himself increasingly isolated when he challenges the might and power of the tough New York City dockers' Union. Rod Steiger is his elder brother, torn between loyalty to union and love of family. Lee J. Cobb is the powerful union boss, while Eva Marie Saint is the girl with whom Brando falls in love.
Winner of 8 Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Support Actress, Best Director and Best Screenplay, this devastating film has, since its first screening, become one of the movie greats.

Winner of no less than eight Oscars at the 1954 Academy Awards On the Waterfront is quite rightly considered a classic. Based on a series of articles that appeared a New York newspaper at the time it tells the gripping story of union violence and corruption amongst longshoremen on the docks of Hoboken, New Jersey.
For a film that is now close to sixty years old On the Waterfront has aged remarkably, largely thanks to Brando in what must still be amongst the greatest ever screen performances. There are a few signs of the films era, such as the slightly intrusive music, and as with all early Hollywood movies it is a little predictable how things will work out. None of this can detract from the overall quality of the film however and it remains an example of Hollywood cinema at its best.
this film is in my top 5 i never get bored of it and with a cast like this you cant go wrong, brando plays terry malloy an ex fighter turned docker, eva marie saint plays edie doyle the love interest, lee j. cobb plays johnny friendly the boss of the gang ridden waterfront, rod steiger plays charlie the gent brother of terry malloy and is also apart of johnny friendly's gang and last but not least the late great karl malden who plays a priest trying to get the dockers to stand up and crush friendly's underworld empire, i can see why this film won 8 academy awards everything about it is just brilliant.
I've seen the godfather, i've seen the missouri breaks, and i've seen apocalypse now but i never really thought much of marlon brando until i saw this. Brando is so incredible in the role of a disgruntled docks worker. The guy who plays jonny friendly is also very good and watch for the last scene. A must buy
