Deep in a forest of pine trees near the coast of Washington State lies a grotesque Gothic mansion commandeered by the Pentagon for use as a special psychiatric hospital for the military. Those elite personnel who know of its existence and the nature of Project Freud refer to it as Centre Eighteen. Confined to the centre are high-ranking military officers who are undergoing treatment for mental breakdowns which are unaccountable by their service experiences.

Determined to establish the true nature and origin of the men's mental illness, the Pentagon enlist the services of Colonel Hudson Kane, a brilliant, yet strangely unorthodox psychiatrist. Kane s unusual approach helps him to withstand the tests that a wildly eccentric fringe inflicts on all the new medical officers. Typical of their number is Captain Cutshaw, an astronaut who aborted a space probe. He is convinced that God is a fraud and that the man in the moon tried to take advantage of his sister.

His fellow inmates are similarly consumed with inner torments they fear the evil within themselves and are afraid that, within a Godless universe, man is alone in leading a purposeless existence. Slowly, through the love he possesses for his fellow man, Colonel Kane is able to break down the lunatic façade of the inmates and of Captain Cutshaw in particular but, as he leads the way back to a world of reality, the dividing line between sanity and madness assumes an increasingly vague definition so much so that Kane's colleagues pose the question of who is the therapist to whom with real urgency.

William Peter Blatty will forever be known as the guy that brought us The Exorcist which in a way is a shame. It cancels out all the great work he did before and after the pea soup spurting head revolving nightmare that kept me awake for all of my child and most of my adult life. This film is a prime example of what im talking about.A castle like asylum for the mentally ill receives a new head of staff in the psychiatric department.this role is played wonderfully by Stacey Keach who carrys the story along with just the right amount of mystery and unnatural calm and patience towards those he's caring for,his second in command is the EVER BRILLIANT Ed Flanders who seems to have been there so long he's turning into a patient. To say much more about the story would give away the cracking ending, and if you were a fan of Blattys own Exorcist 3 then watching this you will no doubt spot similaritiesin style and humour in both films.to me atleast it was a reminder of those great offkilter movies of the late 60's early 70's like MASH and Catch 22 where you think you're being lead in one direction, just to have the rug pulled from under you.STUNNING and CLEVER.Just as a footnote:I will not spoil the story but if you purchase this and watch it,which recent Hollywood blockbuster does it remind you of?infact the recent movie steals configurations plot outline and ending outright.

     Virtually unknown but excellent

This is a bit of a cult classic. It has an good storyline and anyone who has a collection of proper films should give it a go. If you go on youtube and type in the title you will find various clips but don't watch the bar fight as it will spoil the film for you. If you see a couple of clips it will give you an idea of the look of the film.
