A tall, handsome 'preacher' - his knuckles eerily tattooed with 'love' and 'hate' - roams the countryside, spreading the gospel... and leaving a trail of murdered women in his wake. To Reverend Harry Powell (Robert Mitchum), the work of the Lord has more to do with condemning souls than saving them, especially when his own interests are involved. Now his sights are set on $10,000 - and two little children are the only ones who know where it is. 'Chill...dren!' the preacher croons to the terrified boy and girl hiding in the cold, dark cellar... innocent young lambs who refuse to be led astray.

A finely acted, imaginatively directed chiller with brooding power, 'The Night Of The Hunter' stars Mitchum in the most daring and critically acclaimed performance of his career. Spellbinding, ominous, and hauntingly suspenseful, this extraordinary film noir classic remains one of the most frightening movies ever made.

Hollywood legend, Robert Mitchum delivers perhaps his greatest performance in this 1955 classic thriller. Mitchum stars as a mysterious preacher arriving in a small town where he meets and marries a young widowed woman with a young boy and young girl. However he has a ulterior motive, concerning money.
The film is directed by thespian Charles Laughton expertly.
It has its' funny and genuinely creepy moments aswell.

Actor Charles Laughton's only film as a Director is a triumph of visuals and atmosphere over a plot which mechanically is fairly mundane in and of itself.

As Robert Mitchum's fake preacher comes to town seeking the fortune hidden somewhere within the home of widow Shelley Winters and finds that her young children hold the key to it's location a battle begins between the seductive preacher and the innocent children........

Laughton's direction however is superb, using light and shadow and the stage bound sets of the film to create an eerie and at times dream-like setting for events. There's a surrealism to some scenes as they play out that slightly removes the film from 'reality' but nonetheless leaves it a compelling drama, dripping in gothic horror, religion and sensuality even at times.

Well worth catching.

 a true classic.

Charles Laughton's only time as director, here,he does an excellent job.fantastically shot,a very disturbing yet gripping film.robert mitchums ultra fantastic performance. his,and the acting by the 2 children, especially the boy, is worth buying this dvd alone. if i had one critism, however, it would be the over acting from others in the cast, especially the mother.but this pales in the shadow of mitchums performance. all in all, a must buy!

One of the best films ever made directed by Charles Laughton who for some unknown reason only ever directed this
A movie you could watch again and again
