John Ford's The Quiet Man celebrates one of Hollywood's most romantic and enduring epics. The first American feature to be filmed in Ireland's picturesque countryside, Ford richly imbued this masterpiece with his love of Ireland and its people.

Sean Thornton is an American who swears off boxing after accidentally killing an opponent. Returning to the Irish town of his birth, he finds happiness when he falls in love with the fiery Mary Kate. Though he is sorely tempted to pick up the gloves against her brother, the town bully, Sean is determined not to use his fists. Mary Kate and Sean wed but her brother refuses to pay the dowry. Sean would rather walk away than accept this challenge. Even when his new wife accuses him of cowardice, Sean stands firm. But when she boards a train to leave, he is finally ready to take matters into his own hands.

The resulting fist-fight erupts into the longest brawl ever filmed, followed by one of the most memorable reconciliation's in motion picture history!

Always be a christmas movie to me !!

Seen it first with my mum on Christmas Eve close to 25 years ago, loved it then and love it now. It is such a fun film from a time and place you just wish you could live in. Great characters, brilliantly acted and a fantastic story make this an all time classic movie. No worries of laungage or gore, this is a family movie that everyone will enjoy and the magic it has leaves you feeling good after having watched it. A movie like this released now would have tourists filling up the southern coast of Ireland. I once heard they planned to create a bit of a 'theme' area around where the film was made. I hope this is not true as wouldnt it be lovely to walk those hills and fish in those rivers as they were in the movie. "I wander over green hills to dreamy valley" as the Title song 'Isle of Inis Free' goes. Buy it, watch it and feel great. And of course theres a pretty good fight scene in it too.

They Dont Make Movies Like this Anymore!

There are few films that have aged as well as this one. At 56 years old this is certainly the oldest Rom-Com i am aware of, and certainly one of the best. John wayne portrays a boxer who moves back to his childhood town in ireland, in search of the quiet life. what he actually finds is the love of his life played by Maureen O'Hara. Unfortunately the brother of john waynes new beau is none too pleased about there relationship.....
A comedy that is both farcical to subtle and beautiful to cringe-worthy, this films strength not only lies in its comedy but also in its clear portrayal of a time gone by. Honour, etiquette family values and even the I.R.A. are terrifically swirled togther to make an exceptional film.

Best Bit: the climatic Fight Sequence. of this i will say no more. :D

Forget the begrudgers who say this film portrays a sugary, rose-tinted view of Ireland. This film is terrific entertainment, and yes, there's THAT fight sequence!

Yes, an excellent film. Beautiful scenery. Filmed in the village of Cong near Galway if anyone's interested. Still looks the same now & yes Cohans pub is their.
