I didn't catch this on TV, but have just finished watching the last episode tonight. For the most part, this is very gripping. Great acting, casting, good storyline and a liberal dash of sex and violence as expected in any Roman story. The only thing that stops it from getting 5 stars are a few of the middle episodes, which are still watchable, but I thought the story in Egypt got a bit silly and the script lost it's way a bit. The two leads are excellent. I remember seeing Kevin McKidd in Trainspotting 13 years ago and have never seen Ray Stevenson before. Their friendship is the focal point for the series and the history that develops around them. I can't wait to see Series 2 now!
A masterpiece

This series can only be described as amazing! It's probably the best thing i've ever watched on TV and the acting is outstanding! It really provokes thought and emotion and provokes an interest in the Roman Era. Recommend it highly!
Absolutely Amazing!!!

I had not watched this on TV, never really been a fan of ancient history but as soon as I saw a single episode I was hocked, and bought the box set, and season 2 (which so far is just as good). I love this programme its one of the best programmes on TV and I would happily suggest anyone to give it a shot.
Well done HBO!
Compelling, powerful Television

Rome is, quite simply, fantastic. If you like HBO-style drama, or are a (non- squeamish) fan of ancient history, this is for you. More importantly, Kevin McKidd, who plays Lucius Vorenus, was in the Father Ted Christmas Special as the young priest who broke down when they were in the Lingerie department- how can you go wrong with casting like that?
Powerfull!!!!

I think my title says it all. I could type a long essay to describe the brilliance of this production. However, if you have not seen this, then you should.
Amazing!

This series of Rome is amazing! I'm still in the middle of watching it but I can't stop! The storylines are good and keep everyone watching. The characters are played extremely well by the actors and it is a thoroughly good watch. Not for the faint hearted though!
Excellent

Veni, Vidi, Vici - I came, I saw, I conquered. Caeser's famous message to the senate.
Maybe HBO should adopt it as their new company motto. Because as that message was intended to show Caeser's military prowess, HBO's magnificent series really hammers home how very good they are at what they do.
The first thing that really hits you is just how convincing the series is, everything from the clothing to the graffiti has been carefully considered to give a stunning portrayal of ancient Rome.
It's nice to note that the series doesn't shy away from Ancient Rome's many darker aspects either. All the vice and murder are in there and it feels more honest about Ancient Roman life.
The plot is well thought out and involves you in the daily lives of normal Romans. Not just the people at the top of the pile. Many viewers will recognise historical moments such as Caeser's murder and historical characters such as Mark Antony and Cleopatra.
In all watch this series if you enjoy a good storyline, are interested in Ancient Rome or Romans and are not put off by sex or violence.
HBO RULE

I have bought, in the past a few series made by HBO. Such as Deadwood and Band of Brothers. All have been jaw dropping, however, after you watch ROME you will agree that this it is the best made and entertainning series ever to have been on our TV screens. It gives you an accurate understanding an insight into what Roman life would have been. If you like blood, swearing and sex then this series is for you.
