This is the greatest western ever.John Wayne gives a fantastic performance as a racist confederate soldier in search of his kidnapped niece. Lots of monuement valley is shown in the back round with great effect. For some reason has only been really appreciated in recent years. It was even ignored at the oscars in 1956. It is really a great film, a must for anyone

I first saw this film as an 11 year old in1956, and I have never changed my opinion that it is the best western ever.
John Ford and John Wayne created one of the most intriguing and darkest characters in the genre, a man so full of hate and vengeance that he kept searching for his neice for years and years.
The film hinges on this intense hatred, and what the final outcome will be. Both Ford and Wayne deserved oscars for this masterpiece.
The Greatest Western ever made

Make no mistake "The Searchers" is one of the truly great films with breathtaking visual beauty, An amazing epic story and without any shadow of a doubt John Wayne's finest and bravest performance playing the anti hero, Ethan Edwards. Its also easy to see the influence this movie has had on such diverse classics as "Once upon a time in the West" and "Taxi Driver". Truly interested in movies - "See this film"
awesome

I have watched this film at least a half a dozen times still trying to work out why it figures so highly in the lists of best westerns and I am not persuaded. Ethan is portrayed as a racist from the outset and his acceptance of the girl in the closing moments of the film is dramatically unconvincing, as her own change of mind from when she is first discovered. There are the usual Fordian leaden attempts at humour. It's a handsome movie but seriuosly flawed.
Amazing!

I agree one of John Wayne's best performances, the film is long but the story is set over five years, so is understandable. During this time Wayne's character "Ethan" searches for his niece "Debbie" which is being held captive by Camanchi Indians. John Ford captures you the moment the film begins to the end with the open landscape of Monument Valley and the close up shots of the actors. This is a must for any fan of the genre, and in particular John Wayne. A timeless masterpiece & one of the greatest American westerns ever! Certainly worth purchasing at this great price!

Probably one of John Waynes greatest performances , ignore the other review , yes it`s a long film but its a story set over many years of one man`s search for more than just his kidnapped niece , take the time out , you won`t regret it !
