Yul Brynner stars as one of seven master gunmen who aid the helpless farmers of an isolated village, pitted against an army of marauding bandits in this rousing action tale based on Akira Kurosawa's classic 'Seven Samurai'.

Released in 1960, John Sturges' masterpiece garnered an Oscar nomination for Elmer Bernstein (for Best Score) and launched the film careers of Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson, Robert Vaughn and James Coburn.

What else is there to say about Sturges' remake of The Seven Samurai? As soon as Elmer Bernstein's iconic score fills our ears we are back with old friends. Friends that after 48 years still never bore us or let us down.
But really The Magnificent Seven is a collective memory shared between Christmas, Easter, or rainy Sunday afternoons with grandfathers or dads. A film that fills in its own blanks when we join it half way through and a film that we feel compelled to watch even though we have already seen it hundreds of times before.
Simply put, the Magnificent Seven is what is best about cinema.

The Magnificent Seven (1960) - *****
It may not have the style of the Dollars trilogy, or the brutality of The Wild Bunch and The Outlaw Josey Wales, but the Magnificent Seven has truly stood the test of time thanks to it's simple chivalry, emphasis on comradeship and wonderfully colourful characters (Eli Wallach as the crooked but charismatic Calvera and Robert Vaughn as the cowardly Lee in particular). It is a classic which will always appeal to fans of cinema, hosting many big names and based heavily on another classic; Seven Samurai. A fondly thought of favourite.

Normally wouldn't be into the older films, but this one I rather liked.
I could normally find a lot of faults in an old film e.g Chitty, Chitty Bang, Bang!, I could find loads of cock ups in that.
But nothing really in this.
Except the music, I didn't really like the music in this film, but that's not everybody's problem, that's just mine.
So I think four stars is fair.

*A Mexican village hires the Magnificent Seven in order to try and scare away some bandits.
*The Magnificent Seven isn't as brutal or stylish as other westerns. The Magnificent Seven being a PG, is a film that people of all ages can enjoy. Considering it was made over fifty years ago it is still entertaining. There's also a host a famous actors in the film.

Good movie. It is a shame that the audiocommentary has been recorder so low that is impossible to hear Eli Wallach' voice.
