Directed as well as Point Break and written as well as The Terminator, Strange Days is one of those films that resonates with me as being an underrated classic. It is (was) science fiction for the turn of the millennium without the silver suits and flying cars, but based around a pretty neat concept.
It can be a bit 'hollywood' in places but retains a nicely independent feel despite 'A' list casting, with Ralph Fiennes presenting a fantastically slimy character. I am now on my third copy, as I keep lending it out and not getting it back, but at this great price you should really buy your own...
This overly long scifi franchise delivers the audience a different kind of future than what we are used to see on the screen; a dark and depressing one where everything is worse (or pretty much the same) than nowadays. Only, Blade Runner did this a million times better. Strange Days is not a good film, actually it´s really far from it, but there are some things that saves it from a total sink into something that never should have been made. One of those things is Ralph Fiennes (can´t think of any other things at the moment), but the character he plays is too sleazy and obnoxious to really become interesting, and so is the movie itself. Nevertheless, every movie deserves a fan or two.
Seriously overlooked on its cinema release (not by me). This superb film cannot be planted in just one genre. Its has sci-fi elements mixed with a whodunnit thriller. Despite being violent in numerous scenes, I find this film to be one of the most romantic films ever.
Upon numerous viewing, this has finally made it to my No1 favourite of all time so my views are slightly biased, but I must recommend it to anyone who really appreciates good storytelling with beautifully acted characters. Ralph Fiennes (Voldermort) hasn't been as colourful until this years In Bruges. 10/10
... when I heard 'Johnny Mnemonic' was being made into a movie I was so excited, ... until I saw it.
But then came 'Strange Days', which captured the essence of Cyberpunk, and delivered a rooted in reality dark future, an anti-hero, a conspiracy, interpersonal strife, and a little technology to glue it all together. It was the film that 'Johnny Mnemonic' could have been, if they'd put the effort in. Thankyou 'Strange Days' for rescuing the genre.
