Great, if a little spoilt by it's American assets

This is an enjoyable Doctor Who romp and ideal for those fans who have seen little/none of the classic series as it stands on it's own two feet. Some of the American influence (romance, characterisation), leave the thing feeling a little uncomfortable, but Paul McGann easily takes on the role and makes it his own. He clearly enjoys himslef and is a joy to watch. The story may grow a little tiresome on repeated viewings, but recommended to any fan.
A brave attempt.......

This story will always hold a dear place in my hearts (oops)
I saw most of Dr Who from 1970 to 1989 and while I did despair at Bertie Basset, generally, the calibre of the writing for the series was a very high quality.
I read about the myopia shown by the BBC in junking the early series (well done Restoration team) and it saddened me so it was with no small leap that when I heard that Dr Who was being revived by an American Cartel, I waited with some interest.
I came back from honeymoon on the night of broadcast - a joyous event marred by the recent death of Jon Pertwee.... so we sat with our glasses of wine and enjoyed the spectacle
Visually superb, congrats especially to the redesign of the TARDIS interior - it's amazing what a budget and care can do
Yeah, the plot is Americanised.....well, it did hail from the land of Dallas and Dynasty..... and there are plot holes that you can fly a starship through but what the hell - it's fun and the cast look as if they were having loads of fun doing it.
A brave attempt to revive the series which would lie in state until the writing genius of RTD and his team would shock us back into Who-reality.
I would love to see a directors cut (hint, hint)
Another wish for the list...... I would love to see the 8th, 9th, 10th and 11th Doctors - looking ahead in maybe 2011 - together in "The Four Doctors" and maybe retcon a 8th - 9th regeneration as we only ever heard hints about this (but I can dream)
In terms of cast, Paul McGann was an inspired choice as No 8 and Eric Roberts was brilliant as The Master. It would be good to see a sequel story of sorts with the companions having a bit of fleshing out.
Anyway, congrats to Geoffrey Sax and his team, a sterling effort which was never taken heed of...... a superb effort
Paul McGann excells in disappointing DVD release

Although genuinely sad to see Sylvester McCoy relinquish the keys to the TARDIS I feel it was certainly an outstanding choice to select Paul McGann as his replacement. Replete with a marvellously beautiful and suitably eccentric costume Paul conveyed a vibrant, inquisitive and enchantingly fascinating eighth persona of the Time Lord, something that continues to be successfully explored through the Big Finish audio adventures. Onscreen he works well with Daphne Easterbrook's Doctor Grace Holloway and its sad that they both did not share further adventures beyond this 'feature length' special in the TARDIS, now boasting the marvellously realised period splendour of its cavernous interior. However there the plaudits end as the script and realisation of the story is certainly woefully bad. Sadly this 85 minute CBS Fox/BBC co-production does not improve on its DVD release with only a solo commentary rendered by director Geoffrey Sax feeling suitably lacklustre. The addition 'special features' items which total 33 minutes are hardly worthy of repeated viewing and the whole package is certainly one for completist range collectors preferably to be found at a heavily discounted price. Certainly an underwhelming viewing experience!
This is classic who , with all the bells and whistles

How I yearn for this ; proper thrills and spills from a newly re-generated Doctor. The performances from McGann and McCoy and outstanding , the special effects amazing and I'm only sorry this never took off and that the rug was whisked from under McGanns feet so quickly ; the potential he had as an on-screen Doctor will , alas , probably never be seen again. Eric Roberts is a proper nasty , with the slick back hair and leather jacket to go with his neo-gangster image. The story is superb , and the location well chosen. Yes , it was a massive change from the norm , it's mostly US driven, but great to see Doctor Who move on. Motorcycle chases , the Master as a 'slime' , frantic hospital scenes , and the inside of the TARDIS like you have never seen it before. I am sure I am the only person in the world to think this , but Russell Davies has harmed Doctor Who so much since it has comeback with his own dark and somewhat suspect choice of shots that he has roped Ecclestone and Tennant into. The sooner it changes producer the better , and if the US come in for another shot at Who , let them have it.
good story but could have been better

this dvd could have been alot worse i think the main problem is that that it became americanised so it lost some of its appeal but if you can get passed that then you will enjoy it the story is good but sometimes confusing and i think the guy playing the doctor wasnt that comfortable and the fact the only did the movie really wasted was dissapointing although he did do some audio books on the whole though definately one to watch with caution the addition of the master kind of saves it not reccomended if you are just getting into the series gradually build yourself up have a good view
