V For Vendetta (2005) - ****
Natalie Portman and Hugo Weaving lead a host of British stars (Stephen Fry, John Hurt, Tim Pigott-Smith and Stephen Rea) in this marvelous adaptation of the DC graphic novel. The story of rebellion and superhero-ish glamour with a gritty 1984-esque political backdrop is a winning combination. The stunts and action sequences are stylishly executed and the dialogue is both intelligent and thought provoking. Not only that, but the film manages to be funny, satirical and clever with a series of outwitting Adam Sutler's (John Hurt) government particularly memorable. So why only four stars? Unfortunately, Portman doesn't quite pull off Evey, often appearing quite wooden, particularly when opposite Hugo Weaving's V and Stephen Fry as Deitrich. Usually, this would not be enough to lose a star but seeing as though Evey is effectively the audience's eyes into this Britain it should be vital that she is more confident in the role. Usually, this would not be enough to lose a star but seeing as though Evey is effectively the audience's eyes into this Britain it should be vital that she is more confident in the role. She does have her moments, particularly during her capture scenes where she is given more room (ironically, in a prison cell) to act more distinct emotions. Overall, a fantastic film, well worth a watch.
