The evil organization SPECTRE has hatched a plan to steal a decoder that will access Russian state secrets and irrevocably unbalance the world order. It is up to James Bond to seize the device first, but he must confront enemies that include Red Grant and the ruthless Rosa Klebb, a former KGB agent with poison-tipped shoes.

Even as Bond romances a stunning Soviet defector, he realizes he is being lured into a deadly trap, and he will need all of his courage, abilities and cutting-edge technology to triumph over the forces that seek to destroy him.

Connery returns in this second outing as Bond. This is allot better movie than Dr.No. As Bond squares off against the evil SPECTRE organisation in a pulse-pounding race to seize the Soviet Lektor decoding machine. This excellent movie has the iconic boat chase, a brilliant Helicopter attack, but the iceing on the cake is the outstanding brawl on the train with Robert Shaw. This is up there with the best of all the Bonds. Excellent !

2nd Bond film is an absolute classic...

The second Bond film managed to be even better than "Dr No". This has one of the best plots to be found in any Bond, as Our Man travels to Instanbul to bring back a beautiful Russian defector and a Lektor decoding machine.

This actually feels like a terrific spy story rather than a series of big set pieces, which was to be the case with a lot of the later Bonds. Ted Moore's cinematography is highly evocative, turning Istanbul into a labyrinth of darkness and deceit. The scenes aboard the Orient Express are wonderful, providing a perfectly romantic backdrop.

Robert Shaw and Lotte Lenya are unforgettable as the wicked villains. Connery is still playing Bond with a dangerous edge at this point. Daniela Bianchi is extremely appealing as the naive Russian girl, caught up in the dastardly, complex chain of events.

A classic Bond film, one of the very best.

Robert Shaw makes a brilliant opponent, Lotte Lenya is equally impressive and Connery is even better than in Dr No. The fight on the train is one of the very best action sequences in any film. This edition features a better, more accurately framed transfer than the previous one

FROM PINEWOOD WITH A SLIGHTLY BIGGER BUDGET

With John F. Kennedy announcing Ian Flemings James Bond book From Russia With Love as one of his top ten books of all time, Harry Saltzman and Albert R. Broccoli decided to make the book the second Bond film. Sticking close to the plot of the book, Bond takes on evil organisation SPECTRE in order to get his hands on the Lektor decoding device, but his mission is compromised by the organisation wanting revenge for the death of their former agent Dr. No (see previous film).

The film on the whole is very good, the story is impressive and the acting is strong, especially from Connery - who is fast making the role his own - and Robert Shaw as assassin Red Grant. There also appears to be a bigger budget as there are more large-scale stunts and they appear far more realistic than in Dr. No. The only problem is there is not enough (well in my opinion) to make this film as impressive as the first or some of those that followed. Don't get me wrong, there are some great scenes including the helicopter battle, the impressive fight with Red Grant (Shaw) on the train and the unexpected opening title sequence - especially if you are a first time viewer but the film as a whole felt to me that it was lacking something.

Overall From Russia With Love, like Dr. No before it is one of the more realistic Bond outings, but unlike Dr. No elements seem to have been stripped or not added to since the previous outing making feel much of the same but on a larger scale. Even though I have said this however; the film is one of the better Bond adventures and one of Connery's best. It also came before the biggest change of all to the series - Goldfinger.
