For 2 Discs this is an amazing price for a great film. I thought Brosnan was one of the best Bonds personally (except Roger Moore), and this was probably his best film (except Goldeneye!)
This is more like it ! Brosnan is back at his best after the action packed but shallow second outing.
When 007 is assigned to protect a oil heiress, He is catapulted into a adrenaline charged adventure that pits him against one of his most deadly adversaries; Renard ( Robert Carlyle ), a ruthless anarchist whose total imperviouseness to pain makes him a vertually unstoppable enemy.
The film brings more of the flesh and blood side to Bond where he does get hurt. Also he gets to a point where he does not know who to trust. The plot suprises, with it's twist and turns, and Judi Dench has a larger role. The only mistake in the film is casting Denise Richards as the most unlikely nuclear weapons expert ever. Apart from that niggle. The movie is as good as the Brilliant Goldeneye. A Brilliant Bond !
At last, a Bond film where there isn't a cackling pantomime villain attempting to take over the world. Everything about this film is great. I'm slightly reluctant to say its the best ever Bond film, but I'm struggling to think of a better one.
(My only complaint would be a couple of terrible schoolboy jokes about Denise Richards' character's name - they don't fit with the film, and they're not funny.)
Firstly I will admit I have seen this film only once and that was at the cinema in 1999 and I came out thinking what a poor Bond movie. I thought Tomorrow Never Dies before it was a lot better than this. I don't know about can't think of a better Bond film, I can think of 10 straight away. On Her Majesty's Secret Service blows this one away and there are others also that are streets ahead. I remember Robert Carlyle as a nothing special villian and the Bond girls were pathetic. The first 15 mins were good then it fell apart. The other ratings of 5 stars I really don't know what they liked about this.
Overcoming the credulity problem of Denise Richards playing a scientist isn't easy but the film manages it with a great pre credits sequence, one of the best title songs and some of the best acting from Sophie Marceau and the superb Robert Carlyle. Desmond Llewelyn's final scene as Q is rather touching.
