After a year's break from TV screens, the up-to-date take on the traditional tale of Robin Hood returned with a new bunch of writers and a new third series, a series which I feel is the best to date as like the reviewer below me has stated it the writers add a bunch of characters into the mix (Brother Tuck, Kate, Isabella etc) some of which are from the well known tale while others are simply modern day additions. As well as this, as mentioned, the series moves away from the capture and escape mode that was present in most episodes of the first two series.
The main change to this series of course is that of the cast. With the shocking (as in unexpected) end to the second series, viewers and fans were left with little hope for how this new series would play out after losing some of the main characters. The fact is that the new writers do it very well indeed. Launching back into the action straight away, we get one episode devoted to Robin trying to extract revenge for the loss of his love which frees up many more for many different types of adventure. The additions to the cast are brilliant too with Tuck (David Harwood) providing a voice of reason for the gang, Archer (Clive Standen) - the brother and a close match with a bow for Robin, while Lara Palver (Isabella) is amazing as a Cruella de Vil type take on the Sheriff. Despite these great new additions; certain members of the old cast are here too, Jonas Armstrong is back for one last turn as Robin, Sam Troughton as Much - Robin's close friend, Joe Armstrong as Allan, Gordon Kennedy as Little John, the fantastic Richard Armitage returns as a transformed Guy of Gisborne and of course the man who steals the entire show, Keith Allan, who plays the original sheriff, a man everyone hates but loves at the same time.
Series three also has some brilliant episode highlights these being; Let The Games Commence, Do You Love Me, Bad Blood, The Enemy Of My Enemy and the brilliant finale - Something Worth Fighting For (part two being very well done in very aspect). In all; the series totally reinvents itself in terms of storytelling and the take on the traditional tale to move the story forward after the uncertain ending to series two which saw several members of the cast and the head writer depart. Although; this is the final series to date, and we know that certain other cast members are leaving, Jonas Armstrong who plays Robin being one of them, the third series certainly sets things up so they may continue. Heres hoping that like the legend, it does...
