I was pretty astounded !! - to discover that the Original 'Alfie' movie, starring Michael Caine on DVD here, had up until now - NOT received a review, considering the reviews that I had read for the remake, starring Jude Law - which all go to certain lengths to explain how much of a better film the Original is, in comparison with said remake .... Anyway that's not really important now, what is though, is a word or two 'in your shell like' .... about this super film !! It's a grand and perfect mixture between a British Swinging '60's Flic and the so - called, 'Kitchen Sink' Dramas of the late '50's / early '60's, with Michael Caine giving an all - out, star -making performance !! .... It's his film from start to finish ( and so it should be !! ) .... Caine made a stir in 'Zulu' .... He made people sit up and take notice of him in 'The Ipcress File' .... But 'Alfie' is the film that really established him as an International star !! - and apart from a bit of a 'dodgey' phase in the late '70's / early '80's - he has never looked back ..... The man is a national institution and one of this country's best and well - loved actors !! ....Good on yer, mate !! .... Great film !!
Caine is a legend. Great film, equal parts comedy and tense drama, in my opinion. It leaves you with a bitter-sweet aftertaste.
Michael Caine is superb as Alfie Elkins in one of the films that helped make him a star.
Sure by today's standards 'Alfie' feels a bit dated but taken for what it is then this is simply a well-crafted star vehicle for one of Britain's most talented and enduring actors.
This is a classic film, full of cockney wit, memorable lines and Caine provado.
Caine plays Alfie, a like-ably cold, sarcastic cockney geezer, revelling in his womanising. Alfie is a shallow but chirpy character and offers a window into the swinging sixties. So much has changed since, with the roles and characteristics of the sexes so very far from this example.
This is a brilliant film, dates yes but still enjoyable and special. It has... Caine talking to the camera, a Jazz score, witty dialogue, 60's charm, moments of emotion and Michael Marmite Caine.
The film was remade, but this classic still holds weight and deals with topics such as love, abuse, abortion and more.
