Admiral Kirk's defeat of Khan and the creation of the Genesis planet are empty victories. Spock is dead and McCoy is inexplicably being driven insane. Then a surprise visit from Sarek, Spock's father, provides a startling revelation: McCoy is harbouring Spock's living essence. With one friend alive and one not, but both in pain, Kirk attempts to help his friends by stealing the USS Enterprise and defying Starfleet's Genesis planet quarantine. But the Klingons, led by fearsome Battle Commander Kruge, have also learned of Genesis and race to meet Kirk in a deadly rendezvous...

Where the 2nd film crippled fans emotions not so hard since nemesis, the 3rd star trek film continues where we left off.
Spock is dead and his body now remains in peace on the genesis planet. Kirk is distraught and he is not the only one amongst the crew that is suffering.
Returning the enterprise to starbase hq after the damage caused from dueling with khan and the uss reliant, the enterprise is stripped of her crew and left in dock. But almost immeadiately, our heros at the helm plot to steal the enterprise and return to genesis, now a planet that is off limits to all but the science vessel studying it. Captain kirk and his friends manage to steal their ship back and head to genesis to retrieve spock, who has been rebornn as the planet is quickly going through a life cycle, and destroying itself. But quickly heading to the planet is a klingon bird of prey, who's captain wishes to gain the secrets of genesis and use it as a weapon, the fear of the project in the last film that khan tried to use it for. And thus, the two captain's collide for two different prizes.
The second film showed us the threat and power of such a creation as the genesis project of dr marcus, the third film shows their mistake but gives back kirk's friend in the process.
The shame with this film, even though it continues the overall story, is that it was not as strong as the 2nd film, almost as though the budget for making it had been cut in half. But with that said, any fan will love it for what it is and what it stands for. But science fiction reviewers alike will see it for its weakness.
