Intended to be the pilot episode of the new show "Star Trek: Phase Two" - and based on a story by Alan Dean Foster (Alien) - Remastered from the original 1979 movie - Star Trek: The Motion Picture - The Director's Edition brings the characters from the classic series to the big screen, one more time.
If you have never seen the original movie, I would recommend watching this movie at least once in your life. If you have seen the original - then I would recommend watching this version just to see how much better the original could have been, had the technology been available.
The first in a franchise of movies (5 sequels with the complete main cast) - better today then it was in 1979.
(Watchout for Mark "Sarek" Lenard as the Klingon Captain)
phasers certainly set on stun for this special edition!

The film that, in 1979 started the movie adventures of Gene Roddenberry's science fiction concept of Star Trek came to 'special edition' two disc DVD back in 2002 and as a package I feel rather underwhelmed by the content. Admittedly the film itself running at two hours and eleven minutes is, for me at least, as delightfully enjoyable as ever matched by the added optional bonus of selecting either or both a group commentary and text commentary to further enhance the viewing experience. It's when you turn your attention to the second 'bonus features' that you get the feeling that there could, indeed should have been more, especially when you consider other Star Trek 'Special Edition' film titles in the movies range. The most substantial offerings you can view here are the twelve and a half minute 'Phase II : The Lost Enterprise', approx thirty minute 'A Bold New Enterprise' and fourteen minute 'Redirecting The Future' extra features but beyond that there are a selection of trailers, commercials, additional/deleted scenes and storyboard archive extras that really you are only wanting to watch at least once. Phasers are certainly set on stun for a title that you really shouldn't be paying over the odds for!
Our best Crew ... in a boring movie

The effects are tremendous but the story is boring and the characters stay far behind the expectations. Although this is a 2-Disc-DVD it has not really something interesting to offer. No interviews, not really deleted scenes. Nothing what I don't know already. All together, a nice entertainment without surprises.
