Probably Jackie Chan's best film in the 1980s, and the one that put him on the map. The scale of this self-directed police drama is evident from the opening and closing scenes, during which a squatters' village and shopping mall are demolished. There are, clearly, differences between the original Chinese and dubbed English versions, with many of the jokes failing to make their way into the latter. The latter is also hampered by stars who sound nothing like their Chinese originals. In fact, the only thing the dubbing has corrected is the court trial€at the time, trials in colonial Hong Kong were conducted in English, while the original has this scene in Cantonese! Nonetheless, Chan's fighting style and the martial arts choreography inject humour where possible, so non-Cantonese audiences don't miss much. The action is superb from beginning to end, and there's not much time to breathe in between. It'll never get you thinking, but what an entertaining, and well strung-together, film. Arguably, this is one of the best martial arts films out there.

Note on the back of the DVD case it states that Jackie's elite stunt team were seriously injured throughout the recording of the movie. I'm not surprised; the stunts in Police Story are absolutely freekin' INSANE!! Even the most hardcore of action film junkies will be amazed at the all out insanity that ensues on-screen. Half the stunts pulled off are more dangerous than the stuff we see in holywood action flicks today.

Unfortunately the all out action junkies may feel a bit bored it the acting scenes of the movie. Personally, I love 'em and it proves that Jackie is just as fun to watch when he ain't whoopin' butt. Jackie constantly becomes the joker of the acting cast and will leave you sniggering throughout.
This is truly a must have for all Jackie Chan and martial arts fans. This is a movie played out the way Jackie wanted it to with all direction and choreography done by him. But don't take this film too seriously; it is simply a fast martial arts fun ride.
