Michael Fassbender, Dominic West and Olga Kurylenko star in Neil Marshall's (Doomsday, The Descent, Dog Soldiers) telling of the myth of the Roman army's Ninth Legion, Centurion. During the height of the Roman Empire the Ninth Legion was sent to Scotland to defeat the Picts, but not one of them ever returned, not one of three thousand. This is the story of the fearsome battles they may have faced, or what may have enticed them to abandon their Empire.

  • Audio commentary with director Neil Marshall, cinematographer Sam McCurdy, production designer Simon Bowles and special make-up effects designer Paul Hyett
  • The Lost Legion Featurette
  • Getting Down and Dirty Featurette
  • Guts and Gore Featurette
  • Fireballs, Stunts & Mayhem Featurette

Director Neil Marshall seems to do no wrong!
His debut Dog Soldiers was a brilliant low budget horror comedy, The Decent is one of the best savage horrors of the last decade and althogh Doomsday disappointed many ( due to studio interference of the final cut ) I enjoyed it.
Now Mashall turns his eye at the Roman epic and makes one of the most savage and action packed movies of the year. Based on the myth of the Roman 9th Legion going missing in the wilds of Northern England.
This movie is everything the bloated self important Ridley Scott's Robin Hood should have been and failed to be, and all shot on a quarter of Ridley Scott's mega budget. The cast is great,Michael Fassbender is brilliant as the Centurion as he desperatly tries to lead the surviving members of his platoon to safty, whilst all the time being hunted by savage Picts who will stop at nothing to defend their land from the invading Romans. Olga Kurylenko last seen as the Bond beauty in Quantum of Solace is very good as the savage Pict hunter tracker, as she slaughters any Roman who gets in her path. The rest of the cast are great with plenty of well known faces and at times your attention is drawn from the movie because of woundering what you had seen them in before.
Neil Marshall directs the movie at break neck pace and there is hardly a dull moment, but it's the savage battles that really impress as limbs fly and blood splatters the screen in spectacualr fashion.
NUTS magazine said on the sleeve that Centurion is Britains answer to Gladiator, but Centurion is a different kind of film due to it's much smaller budget and running time. Centurion has more in common with Apocalypto than Ridley Scott's Roman epic.
This is a lean mean action movie and hopefully will spawn sequels as the ending hints.

 Stunning!!!

Quite simply, this is one of the best films I have either seen or bought, for some time. The scenery is spectacular, the feel of the film itself draws you in and leaves you breathless.
Although it is set in the 'Gladiator' times, it is rather different from Mr Scotts Roman epic, but it is in no way any less dramatic.
The fact that this was done on a much lesser budget just goes to show that you don't need to spend mega-bucks to make a film of this class.
Don't forget to watch the special features too, it will give you an idea of the 'cold & pain' the actors went through to create such realism. Jumping into a freezing cold river in mid winter... now that is suffering for your art! And all shot in beautiful Scotland too.
This should & will be a classic of it's time in years to come, a right little gem!
You won't regret buying this baby.

 Great Film

Don't bother looking at on-line reviews before buying this film, since most sites and major papers seemed to rate this film pretty poorly. This movie was a testament that skill and talent can easily trump Hollywood's bloated budgets. Neil Marshall has crafted a great action/chase movie set in some beautifully filmed locations. Great action scenes and some good performances from the cast made for a great viewing experience that I will definitely watch again and again. I had the pleasure of watching this movie after the newly released Robin Hood. Ridley Scott's blockbuster was boring, overblown and lacking both in both action and heart. This was a real treat of a film, at probably a 10th of the budget. A must buy!

 Suprisingly Good

First off the bad points. The 9th legion isnt in this much, infact the lgened of the 9th is only used to create this story. There is a lot of running which reminded me alot of Lord of the Rings. The story is VERY fictional.
The good: Excellent acting, high detail and intense fight scenes. Predictable storyline and events, but how they are acheived was very interesting and well done. Obviously low budget, but this does not detract from the film. Mor so i beleive it adds to it!.
Inshort: if you value truth over entertainment, this film wont be the best but will still be fun. If your happy to sacrafice truth for entertainment, buy this film!!
